YAKIMA – Grandview’s Frankie Medina and Zillah’s Dekker Van De Graaf won the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year awards for their respective classifications.
The awards are given to the top seniors in each class.
Medina, the 2A winner, was an all-CWAC selection for the second straight season. He overcame ankle injuries early and late in the season to average 20.1 points per game, and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career.
In the postseason, Medina was at his best. He scored 18 points, to go along with teammate Braden Santos’ game-high 25, to lead the Greyhounds to a victory against Selah in the district championship.
Grandview returned to the state tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome after missing out last season.
After falling to second-seeded and eventual runner-up R.A. Long in a round-of-16 game, Medina began his SunDome stay by scoring 37 points on 12-for-19 shooting.
He continued the onslaught for three more games, scoring more than 20 points in each contest, while shooting 49,4%, and topped the tournament with 105 points and a 26.3 points-per-game average as the Greyhounds took sixth.
Medina was the runner-up in tournament MVP voting behind Jalen Davis, who repeated as MVP in leading Bremerton to its second championship in a row.
Van De Graaf, WIBCA's 1A winner, also overcame an early season ankle injury which sidelined him four games.
He averaged more than 18 points per game, and was a first-team all-SCAC selection after winning the conference’s MVP the previous two seasons.
The 6-foot-5 guard helped the Leopards win their first 26 games, and win the SCAC regular-season and District 5 championships.
In a semifinal victory against third-seeded Royal, Van De Graaf led the top-ranked Leopards with 34 points and 12 rebounds.
He topped the tournament in scoring at 20.3 points per game for the tourney runners-up.
Other winners included Ethan Harris of Camas (4A), Brian Webster of O’Dea (3A), Adrik Jenkin of Colfax (2B) and Jerome Toby of Lummi Nation (1B).
Rainier Beach's Tyran Stokes was the overall Player of the Year.
