Pirates meet No. 6 Lake Washington, Rams get rematch with Bellevue

On every third Monday in January, civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is recognized on a federal holiday around the country.


One of the ways he is celebrated is through basketball.


In western Washington, eight MLK Day holiday tournaments are being held at local gymnasiums — from as far south as Longview to Seattle.


Here is a roundup of all the events going on Monday:


MLK ‘THE DREAM’ SHOWCASE

Monday at Federal Way High School

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Rogers of Puyallup vs. Stadium boys, 9 a.m.; Bainbridge vs. Tahoma boys, 10:30 a.m.; River Ridge vs. Seattle Prep girls, noon; Prairie vs. Annie Wright boys, 1:30 p.m.; Davis vs. Federal Way boys, 3 p.m.; Davis vs. Lake Washington girls, 4:30 p.m.; Bellevue vs. Sumner girls, 6 p.m.; Annie Wright vs. Emerald Ridge girls, 7:30 p.m.

Best matchup: Top-ranked Class 3A girls team Bellevue takes on reigning 4A runner-up Sumner in a nonleague blockbuster. Led by junior Kawehi Borden, the Spartans like to get out and run. But will they keep up with Bellevue’s frenetic pace?

Tickets: $15 for everyone


KING SHOWCASE

Monday at ShoWare Arena, Kent

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Bellarmine Prep vs. Union girls, 10 a.m.; King’s vs. Auburn Mountainview boys, 11:30 a.m.; North Thurston vs. Tualatin (Ore.) girls, 1 p.m.; Edmonds-Woodway vs. Tualatin boys, 2:30 p.m.; White River vs. Issaquah girls, 4:30 p.m.; Mount Si vs. Puyallup boys, 6 p.m.; Kentwood vs. Lake Washington boys, 7:30 p.m.

Best matchup: Perennial Class 4A powerhouse Mount Si has become a marquee-game staple in this event, and this year is no different. The Wildcats meet Puyallup in a state-quarterfinal rematch from a year ago.

Tickets: $10 for everyone


MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. BASKETBALL TRIBUTE

Monday at Lower Columbia College, Longview

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Kalama vs. Battle Ground girls, 9:30 a.m.; Ilwaco vs. Castle Rock boys, 11 a.m.; Jefferson vs. Kelso girls, 12:30 p.m.; W.F. West vs. Kelso boys, 2 p.m.; North Clackamas Christian (Ore.) vs. Napavine girls, 3:30 p.m.; Tumwater vs. Hockinson girls, 5 p.m.; Battle Ground vs. Tumwater, 6:30 p.m.; Evergreen of Vancouver vs. Mark Morris boys, 8 p.m.

Best matchup: Lots of southwest Washington flavor in Longview — and even further south as highly-touted North Clackamas Christian from Oregon, led by the three Turner sisters, grapples with Hayden Kaut-led Class 2B contender Napavine.

Tickets: $10 for adults, $7 for children


MLK DAY CLASSIC

Mondayat Seattle Pacific University, Seattle

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Sumner vs. Ballard boys, 11 a.m.; North Kitsap vs. Astoria (Ore.) girls, 12:30 p.m.; Issaquah vs. Lummi boys, 2 p.m.; Mount Rainier vs. Selah girls, 3:45 p.m.; Bremerton vs. Glacier Peak boys, 5:30 p.m.; Kentridge vs. Seattle Prep boys, 7 p.m.

Best matchup: If Jalen Davis (ankle) returns for Class 2A boys champion Bremerton, the Knights and traditional 4A contender Glacier Peak could be a lot of fun, especially at the guard position. Reed Nagel runs the show for the Grizzlies.

Tickets: $10 for everyone


MLK INVITATIONAL

Monday at Renton High School

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Kent-Meridian vs. Evergreen of Seattle boys, 10 a.m.; Garfield vs. Nathan Hale boys, 11:30 a.m.; Renton vs. Eisenhower girls, 1 p.m.; Selah vs. Mercer Island boys, 2:30 p.m.; West Valley vs. Bellevue boys, 4 p.m.; Redmond vs. Garfield girls, 5:30 p.m.; Renton vs. Lindbergh boys, 7 p.m.

Best matchup: A year ago, Austin Birley sank a halfcourt shot at the buzzer to lift West Valley to a win over Bellevue. The rematch of that memorable game is happening as both programs jockey for a big RPI victory.

Tickets: $10 for everyone


WILLIE STEWART SHOWCASE

Mondayat Lincoln High School, Tacoma

Format: Girls tournament

Schedule: Bethel vs. Kentwood, 10:30 a.m.; Roosevelt vs. Lincoln of Tacoma (JV), noon; Federal Way vs. Franklin, 1:30 p.m.; Roosevelt vs. Lincoln of Tacoma, 3 p.m.

Best matchup: Club teammates Giselle Dollar (Roosevelt) and Oliviyah Edwards (Lincoln), both NCAA Division I signees, are expected to face off against each other when the 3A Metro-leading and second-ranked Roughriders come to the Abes’ gymnasium.

Tickets: $10 for adults, $5 for children


PUGET SOUND HOLIDAY CLASSIC

Monday at University of Puget Sound, Tacoma

Format: Girls tournament

Schedule: Bothell vs. Carondelet (Calif.), 2 p.m.; Bishop Blanchet vs. Gig Harbor, 3:30 p.m.; Woodinville vs. Tahoma, 5 p.m.

Best matchup: Reduced slate of games still offers a glimpse at some of the best programs in Washington — and one from California. Top-10 matchup between Class 4A teams Woodinville and Tahoma could see 60 or more 3-point attempts.

Tickets: $15 for everyone


CATHOLIC CLASSIC

Mondayat Kennedy Catholic, Burien

Format: Boys and girls tournament

Schedule: Eastside Catholic vs. Kennedy Catholic girls, 2 p.m.; Bishop Blanchet vs. Kennedy Catholic boys, 3:30 p.m.; Eastside Catholic vs. O’Dea boys, 5 p.m.

Best matchup: Even though it is three games, there’s some serious post-playing star power in Burien, including Amy Nduka, of Eastside Catholic girls, and Yabi Aklog, from the Crusaders boys, who will try and avenge earlier 3A Metro loss to O’Dea.

Tickets: $7 for adults, $5 for students
