FEDERAL WAY – After watching his team uncharacteristically misfire on a string of perimeter shots, Davis of Yakima girls basketball coach Akil White said he’s not worried.

In fact, he’s even more confident in his team’s season-long push at defending its Class 4A championship.

Led by Cheyenne Hull’s game-high 26 points, and late 3-pointers from Isa Garcia and Kobe Johnson, the top-ranked Pirates held off No. 6 Lake Washington, 54-48, at the MLK “The Dream” Showcase at Federal Way High School on Monday.

Holding as large as a 13-point lead twice in the third quarter, Davis went cold against the Kangaroos’ deafening zone defense – so badly, it appeared the Pirates were lifeless in energy.

“We were missing shots,” White said.

And Lake Washington closed the gap to 48-45 on two Ileana Olteanu free throws with 2:19 remaining.

But Garcia drilled a 3-pointer from the left side 20 seconds later. And Johnson made the last of her four 3-pointers to push the Davis lead to 54-45 with 1:17 to go.

This all came after the Pirates missed 11 consecutive field-goal attempts during a five-minute scoring skid in the fourth quarter.

“We won’t shoot it (poorly) like that ever again,” White said.

Ashely Uusitalo scored 14 points for Lake Washington, eight coming in the fourth quarter. Olteanu had 12 points, and Julia Benthin added 11.

“We just showed we could hang with the best team in the state,” Lake Washington girls coach Jeff Wilson said.
