PROSSER – Memo to the Selah girls basketball team from the six opponents that have faced Prosser since the Vikings upended the Mustangs:

Thanks a lot.

Already having exorcised its struggles against CWAC rival Ellensburg a month earlier, No. 3 Prosser on Friday night made it a sweep of the seventh-ranked Mustangs, 74-47.

It was the Mustangs’ sixth straight blowout victory since the Vikings surged past Prosser two-and-a-half weeks ago. The average margin of victory has been more than 50 points.

“It’s been very motivating,” Mustangs star junior Herbie Wright said. “It’s changed our practices, and how we push the tempo and push each other.”

In the teams’ first meeting, Prosser built a 16-point lead before holding on for a 60-54 victory to end a 15-game slump against the Bulldogs.

Friday, there was no easing up. The Mustangs roared to an 18-4 lead midway through the first quarter, forced nine turnovers in the period and would douse any would-be suspense with continued pressure.

“We always talk about punching first, and when we punch first a lot of times we let up,” Prosser coach Jessica Hungtington said. “So we talked about punching first, punching second and gas the whole game – all gas and no brakes.”

Wright keyed the onslaught, netting 13 of her game-high 33 points in the opening quarter. She also pulled 11 rebounds against the Bulldogs, who often slowed her the past two seasons.

“I think that’s a turning point for her mentally and physically just growing as a player,” Huntington said. “I know her focus has been team first, but also how she can help us achieve what we need to achieve.”

Wright sank four 3-pointers and was 10 of 19 from the field.

“My coaches trust me and my teammates trust me,” Wright said. “I feel a lot more confident in myself. I put in a lot more time in the fall and the summer.”

Deidra Phillips added 16 points for Prosser, and Lailah Carter and Amelia Chapman each had 10.

Ellensburg junior standout Bella Standish battled foul trouble, limiting her to 15 points, nine of which came after she was tagged for her fourth foul three minutes into the second half, crippling the chances for another rally.

Ellie Markus added 14 points and nine rebounds, and Molly Moffat chipped in 10 points for the Bulldogs, who struggled against Prosser’s full-court press, committing 25 turnovers.

Prosser (11-1 CWAC, 14-3 overall) heads to East Valley for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off. After hosting Toppenish on Tuesday, the Mustangs visit sixth-ranked Selah on Feb. 3 and host No. 9 Grandview three days later as they try to wrap up their first conference championship since 2011.

That season Prosser finished 26-1, winning the state championship led by Tamara Jones, an assistant on Huntington’s staff.

The Mustangs hold a game lead over the Vikings and Greyhounds going into Saturday’s action.

Ellensburg (7-4, 10-5) hosts Grandview at 3:30 Saturday afternoon. It was the Greyhounds who ended the Bulldogs’ 82-game regular season winning streak.

The CWAC gets two berths to the state tournament, with the district third-place finisher meeting a Northwest Conference opponent for another bid.
