TOPPENISH – With 14 state-qualifiers and five champions, second-ranked Toppenish is still the king of the CWAC wrestling world.
The gap, however, isn’t as wide as it used to be.
Ellensburg, which upended the Wildcats during the conference dual season, finished second Saturday, earning 11 state berths and Cash Eyler winning the 132-pound title.
Othello was third with 13 wrestlers advancing and Camilo Mendez III claiming the title at 150.
Toppenish entered the tournament ranked second with Othello third. Ellensburg is not in Washington Wrestling Network’s top 10.
Wildcat seniors Steven Romero (126) and Justyce Zuniga (138) remained on track for their four state championships by winning their weight classes Saturday.
Audon Clark (120), Anthony Sifuentes (144) and Ezequiel Ramirez (190) also won district titles for Top-Hi.
The top-five finishers earned state berths.
