GRANDVIEW – All season, CWAC rival Othello has been on the heels of Class 2A girls champion Toppenish, which has won four straight state crowns.

But whether in a dual or this weekend’s district tournament, the Wildcats have been able to hold off the Huskies.

The two teams dominated the tournament, with Toppenish outdistancing Othello, which is ranked No. 1 with the Wildcats No. 2, by 35.5.

Ephrata was a distant third.

Toppenish qualified 15 wrestlers, with seven winning championships.

Wildcat seniors Sophia Torres (105 pounds) and Adalyne Montiel (110) continued their marches toward a fourth state championship by cruising to district championships.

Other Toppenish winners included Sara Ortega (135), who is eyeing a state repeat, Linsey Ortega (120), Jocelyn Chavez (125), Evette Esquivel (170) and Charlene Underwood (235).

Othello also qualified 15 wrestlers. Freshman Addie Russell continued a strong debut season, winning the championship at 140, while senior Angie Monday (130) and junior Karla Guzman (145) also won their weight classes.

Ephrata’s Adylene Sanchez (155) won her weight class, and will try for another state title next week.

The top five wrestlers in each class advance to state.
