YAKIMA – The Ellensburg and Selah girls basketball teams capped their campaigns posing with trophies Saturday in the Class 2A state tournament at the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The Vikings, making their first trip to state in 45 years, finished sixth under CWAC Coach of the Year Ray Navarro, and the Bulldogs followed by claiming third, their sixth-straight top-six finish which has included two championships and a pair of runner-up finishes.

Ellensburg won for the 10th time in 12 games, the only losses to CWAC rival and state finalist Prosser, by beating No. 4 Clarkston 58-44.

Junior first-team all-leaguer Bella Standish recorded game-bests of 22 points and 14 to lead the Bulldogs, who used a 20-2 run to lead by 15 after the first quarter.

Standish moved into second place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,463 points. She trails here aunt Kayla Standish, a 2008 graduate who finished with 2,076.

Bella Standish did pass her aunt Saturday with her 21st 20-point game.

Ellis Markus capped her prep career with 18 points, while fellow senior Molly Moffat added a half dozen for first-year Ellensburg coach Austin Smith.

Although the Bulldogs will lose Markus and Moffat to graduation, they’re set to return a strong core to build around Standish, who is likely to receive all-state consideration.

Freshman Brea Potucek and junior Sylvia Gruber also top scorers for Ellensburg.

Likewise, Selah – which fell to Deer Park 65-45 on Saturday – will have several players returning for Navarro.

First-team all-CWAC pick Elise Kingston, who led the Vikings with 15 against the Stags, is just a junior, while second-team selection Makenna Pepper is sophomore.

“We’ve had an abundance of girls basketball talent come through Selah all at once from the players to the coaching staff,” Navarro said after Friday’s victory. “And with hard work, dedication, and togetherness we were able to accomplish something special.”

With regular-season and district champion Prosser set to play for the championship, the CWAC took home half of the trophies handed out.

Had there been four state berths for the district, Grandview – which split with Ellensburg and Selah – might have made it to the SunDome, too.
