SEATTLE – Davis girls basketball coach Akil White on Saturday night was awarded the Washington State Girls Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year at the All-State games at King’s High School.
A week earlier, White guided the top-ranked Pirates to the second straight Class 4A state championship with a 62-51 victory against No. 8 Sumner in the Tacoma Dome.
Davis finished the season 24-2 and were unbeaten against in-state competition.
Zillah girls coach Joel Yellow Owl was the winner of the 1A State Coach of the Year after leading the Leopards to the state championship in the SunDome. Yellow Owl replaced Zillah legend and longtime coach Brandie Valadez, who passed away after a lengthy bout with cancer.
Moses Lake's Matt Strophy won the John Wooden Legacy Award.
In the Saturday’s All-State games for seniors, Davis’ Deets Parrish scored eight points, grabbed eight rebounds and had two steals to help the 4A to a 100-84 victory against the 3A.
Prosser’s Deidra Phillips recorded nine points and three rebounds, and Ellensburg’s Ellie Markus had eight points and seven rebounds as the 2A beat the 1A 113-85.
Zillah’s Addison Johnston had two points for the 1A.
The boys All-State games are set for March 21 at Bellevue College.
