SELAH – Just a pregame glimpse at eighth-ranked West Valley of Spokane let Selah coach Greg Haste know his No. 10 Vikings were in a battle Friday night.

And Selah, which had motored through its first four games, were more than up to the challenge.

Climbing out of an early 10-point hole, the Vikings again rode the legs of star senior running back Calen Wuitschick and the offensive linemen who plow the way for the senior to a 29-24 victory at Karl Graf Field.

By winning their lone nonconference matchup of the regular season, Selah is 5-0 for the first time since capturing the CWAC title and advancing to the Class 2A state quarterfinals in 2017.

“We were excited to play such a good team,” said Vikings coach Greg Haste of the reigning Greater Spokane League 2A champs led by 2025 league MVP Nathan Zettle at quarterback.

The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 lead early in the second, before Selah strung together three touchdown drives to take a 21-10 lead, and hold on to win the key nonleague matchup.

Following a familiar script, Wuitschick eclipsed the 200-yard mark on ground for the second time this season with 293 yards, and rushed for three touchdowns giving him 18 total for the season. Jerrid Scribner added a short touchdown pass to Hayden Nelson-Hawkins.

Selah’s first four opponents have a combined record of 6-14. The Eagles of the Greater Spokane League entered Friday’s game sporting a 4-0 record.

“They never have a negative play, and sometimes in high school football, it’s who can make the least negative plays,” Haste said.

The Vikings, though, met the moment, notching their biggest win of the season, with matchups against fellow unbeatens Prosser and East Valley in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Haste said he doesn’t want to think too far ahead. He’s enjoying the journey even more than the unblemished record.

“I just don’t want it to go by too fast,” he said. “We’re having fun and these seniors are great. It’s not necessarily about being 5-0. That grindy part of the season, that’s what football is all about – we don’t want it to end.”

Selah heads to Toppenish next Friday, before returning home to host Ellensburg.

The Vikings cap the regular season with a visit to the fourth-ranked Mustangs on Oct. 16, followed by the conference finale a week later against East Valley.
