East Valley, Selah roll in CWAC semifinals, earning state berths

Red Devils, Vikings meet Tuesday for district title, Naches Valley upsets way to state

Tied atop the league after the regular season, top-seeded East Valley and No. 2 Selah advanced to the CWAC district championship game with dominating semifinal performances Saturday.


The Vikings (18-3) hammered Ephrata 20-4 at Ruth Harris Field, while the Red Devils (18-4) handled Ellensburg 10-0.


Selah and East Valley, who both earned Class 2A state tournament berths, will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Carlon Park in a rematch of last year’s final won by the Red Devils.


Aspin Grubenhoff smacked a two-run homer and a solo shot, Payton Brown homered with a runner aboard, and Avery Brewer hit a solo home run for the Vikings.


Grubenhoff totaled four hits and six RBI, Brewer added three hits and drove in four runs, and Kymbree Brost had three hits – two of them doubles – and knocked in a pair of runs.


CWAC BRACKET / SCAC BRACKET


Ephrata, which ousted Prosser earlier Saturday with a 17-4 victory, got two hits and two RBI from leadoff hitter Camila Martinez.


The fourth-seeded Tigers (11-13) meet No. 3 Ellensburg (17-7) at 4 p.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to a crossover with a Northwest Conference team for a state berth.


EAST VALLEY 10, ELLENSBURG 0: At Yakima, Tia Ramynke was 3 for 3 with a two-run homer, Brynlee Martinez added a two-run shot and Kinley Manrique and Sophiya Castaneda added solo blasts for the Red Devils.


That was more than enough for Presley Weatherley, who scattered six hits and struck out four for EV.


She also had three hits and drove in a run.


Sarah Stueckle and Miley Porter each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Naches Valley rides upsets to state

Seventh-seeded Naches Valley shut out No. 2 Royal and outslugged third-seeded Chelan to earn a spot in the District 5 championship and the Class 1A state tournament berth that comes with it.


The Rangers (10-12) will meet top-seeded College Place (20-2) in Wednesday’s final at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.


Naches Valley senior Eden Hayes outdueled reigning SCAC Player of the Year Jill Allred in the victory against the Knights.


Hayes scattered five hits and struck out nine, and singled home the only run of the game in the top of the sixth. Angie Anderson also doubled for NV.


Hali Christensen and Lizzie Jenks each had two hits for Royal (16-7).


The Rangers pounded out 10 hits against the Goats, with Anderson, Lilli VanWagoner and Fallon Bacchus all hitting RBI doubles. Bacchus added a two-run single.


College Place powered its way to the district final, thumping No. 8 Cascade 21-0 and edging fifth-seeded Kiona-Benton 8-7.


The Hawks pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of eight walks against the Kodiaks.


Carli Ray had three hits, including a two-run triple, drove in four runs and stole home, Payton Moore was 3 for 3 with three RBI, and Audrey Schild had three hits, including an RBI double.


Against the Bears, Moore had two hits – one of them a double – and two runs, and Ray added two hits including an RBI double.


Ki-Be will meet Royal, and Cashmere faces Chelan on Wednesday at Gateway with the winners advancing to winner-to-state games against Northeast 1A teams.
