ELLENSBURG – So far, so … pretty good for the Selah football team.

The Vikings earned their second running-clock shutout victory to start the season, but now it’s time to go to work, second-year coach Greg Haste said following Friday’s 42-0 CWAC victory against Ellensburg at Andreotti Field.

An opening 44-0 win against Quincy followed by the handling of the Bulldogs were nice, but what’s next is what will test the Viks’ mettle.

Selah hosts former Mid-Valley League rival West Valley next Friday in the Vikings’ lone nonleague matchup. Then it’s back to the CWAC and defending champion Othello.

“We have to go to work, we have to clean up all our penalties and we have to be ready for even more physicality.” Haste said. “We’re not big, we’re athletic so we have to have a plan to go against guys who are bigger than us.”

Selah was whistled for 15 penalties, bogging down the offense in the second quarter.

Still, the ball-hawking Vikings limited the Bulldogs to 76 yards of offense in the first half and had two takeaways, including Cody Trenkenschuh’s 55-yard touchdown return of the Selah’s third of four interceptions.

“Defensively we just have a lot of athletes and they’ve been playing good ball and that’s fun to watch,” Haste said.

Offensively, when they weren’t stubbing their toe with flags, the Vikings moved the ball well.

Senior quarterback Dylan Kingston threw for 214 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard strike to Hayden Nelson-Hawkins on Selah’s second play from scrimmage.

“We’re way more aggressive on offense this year and we’re taking risks and we’re going to push the ball around the field,” Haste said.

Nelson-Hawkins finished 113 yards on four receptions, while Logan Martin and Jaxon Benge added touchdown grabs. Kingston and Calen Wuitschick had rushing scores for the Viks.

“We’re just trying to keep control of the ball, the last couple years we haven’t been able to do that,” Kingston said.

Carlos Patino was a bright spot for the Bulldogs, rushing for 91 yards on 18 carries.

The shutout was the Vikings’ first in the series since 1992, and the second-largest winning margin for Selah.

Ellensburg has allowed 91 points in its first two games, the most in the program’s history.

The Bulldogs visit Ephrata next week.
