Football notes: Jay, Mavs rolling at record pace

Moses Lake airing it out, while CWAC is deep and SCAC's best a stingy lot

Three weeks into the regular season Moses Lake senior quarterback Brady Jay has enjoyed what most would consider a good season.

But could the Montana-bound slinger be looking at the season?

Playing is father and coach Brett Jay’s wide-open offense, Jay has thrown for 1,352 yards and 21 touchdowns against a single interception.

That puts him on pace to be just shy – through a 10-game regular season – of the record 4,600 yards Prosser and Boise State-legend and New Orleans Saints coach Kellen Moore put up as a junior in 2005 playing for his father, Tom, in 15 games and a Class 3A championship game appearance.

That record, though, isn’t a goal for Coach Jay.

“That’s something – 100% – if it happens it happens,” said the coach, who has the Mavericks poised to repeat as CBBN champions. “We’re going with what has been the most productive.”

Jay says his team has a run game ready to put in play when – or if – any defense can slow the pass attack.

Moses Lake (3-0 overall, 1-0 conference) handled Sunnyside 49-13 this past Friday, and heads to the Apple Bowl this week to take on Wenatchee.

The Grizzlies scored a second half touchdown, the first score the Mavs have surrendered after halftime this season under defensive coordinator Jeff Muai, who was part of the Richland staff that guided the Bombers to the 2018 4A state championship.

“Our defensive coordinator is doing a great job and we’ve added a few wrinkles,” Jay said.

ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER SHOWDOWN: The CWAC race is shaping up to be a slugfest until the final week of play at the end of October.

Entering Friday play, three teams are unbeaten – East Valley, Othello and Selah – and the Red Devils, Huskies and Prosser are in VaristyWA’s 2A top 10.

Ephrata and Toppenish are just a game back with the Mustangs having edged each.

After EV held off the Prosser 13-7 last week at Earl Barden Field, another key matchup is on tap this Friday when the Vikings head to Othello.

The final five weeks of conference offer up potential doozies:

· Oct. 3: Othello at East Valley.

· Oct 17: Selah at East Valley, Othello at Prosser.

· Oct. 30: Prosser at Selah.

STINGY AT THE TOP: Unbeaten Cashmere, which sits at No. 2 in the top 10, has yet to be scored on this season. Keyed by UNLV-bound defensive lineman, the Bulldogs have three shutouts this season to go with the five of 2024.

Top-ranked Royal and fellow unbeaten Zillah entered last Friday also have not surrendered a point before Connell scored a touchdown on the Knights and Wapato scored twice in its loss to the Leopards.

Royal visits Zillah this weekend, and will entertain the Bulldogs the following week in a showdown of which all of 1A and much of the state will have interest.
