Friday’s conference showdowns produced two divergent results.

East Valley proved it’s the class of the CWAC by scoring 33 points in the second quarter en route to a 36-13 victory.

Meanwhile, second-ranked Cashmere gave No. 1 and five-time defending Class 1A state champion Royal all it could handle before the Knights prevailed 21-15 in overtime for their 40th straight victory.

Elsewhere, the standings are starting to sort out the postseason contenders from the rest of the pack.

Here’s a recap of Friday night’s action:

CBBN

SUNNYSIDE 42, WEST VALLEY 6: At Yakima, Derek Hansen rushed for nearly 200 yards and a score, and Julian Villanueva tossed three touchdowns (two of them to Cody Diddens) and ran for two more, and the Grizzlies, who had a front-loaded schedule, earned their first victory. With Moses Lake and Eastmont in the rearview mirror, Sunnyside could string several wins together.

MOSES LAKE 70, EISENHOWER 0: At Moses Lake, Mavericks quarterback Brady Jay continued to put up video-game like numbers. The Montana recruit threw for nearly 400 yards and eight touchdowns to keep eighth-ranked Moses Lake unbeaten. Grant Smith caught three of Jay’s scoring tosses, while Elijah Burns and Noah Decubber snared two apiece.

EASTMONT 21, WENATCHEE 17: At East Wenatchee, Austin Zelinski’s two-yard scoring run in the third quarter gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game and they held on to win the Battle of the Bridges. Bodie Yale added a 45-yard scoring scamper. Michael Mahuika rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown for the Panthers.

CWAC

EAST VALLEY 36, OTHELLO 13: At Yakima, the Red Devils trailed 7-0 after the first quarter … and then exploded, scoring 33 points in the second quarter to knock off the defending conference champs and gain the inside track to their first league crown since 2004. Braden Albrecht rushed for 102 yards and two short touchdown runs, while Cody Gasseling ran for a score and caught another.

PROSSER 35, QUINCY 7: At Quincy, the Mustangs held a third conference opponent to a touchdown or less in winning a second straight game. Prosser faces a tough two-week stretch, with Royal visiting next Friday and Othello coming to Art Fiker Stadium on Oct. 17. The Matchup with the Huskies will likely decide second place in the CWAC.

SELAH 35, TOPPENISH 14: At Selah, Dylan Kingston ran for two touchdowns and threw for another score and the Vikings bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat the Wildcats in a contest that will be crucial in deciding the top four teams in the conference. Selah visits Grandview next Friday, before ending the conference schedule by visiting East Valley and then hosting Ephrata and Prosser.

SCAC

ROYAL 21, CASHMERE 15 (OT): At Royal City, junior quarterback Grant Wardenaar threw for 260 yards and two scores – including a 13-yard game-winning touchdown to Dax Jenks in overtime – and ran for another as the Knights held off the Bulldogs.

WAPATO 14, COLLEGE PLACE 12: At College Place, the Wolves ended a two-game slide, denying the Hawks their first win of the season.

ZILLAH 60, KIONA-BENTON 0: At Benton City, the Leopards set up a likely battle for second place in the conference next Friday when they travel to Cashmere. Sophomore quarterback Beau Donahoe was an efficient 12 for 16 for 232 yards with four touchdowns. Jace Salme had four receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Maverick Myers rushed for 74 yards and two scores.

CONNELL 52, NACHES VALLEY 7: At Connell, a week after scoring 70 points, the Eagles again broke the half-century mark for their second straight victory. Like last season, Connell’s record suffered against a front-loaded schedule, but the Eagles have a more favorable slate the rest of the season.

Nonleague

EPHRATA 47, DAVIS 7: At Yakima, Brady Hendrick accounted for seven touchdowns – four on the ground and three in the air – as the Tigers took a break from their CWAC schedule and gained a victory. Noah Newkirk tossed a scoring pass to Nigel Hernandez for the Pirates.
