East Valley put together another complete performance Friday night at Earl Barden Field, handing Selah a 42-13 setback to improve to 6-0 in the CWAC (7-0 overall).
Senior tight end/running back Cody Gasseling ran for three touchdowns — including a 65-yard outburst in the fourth quarter — and senior quarterback Jaxon Berg threw for two scores as the No. 5-ranked Red Devils set the tone early and never looked back.
“It’s been a long time since this team has gone 7-0, but we know we can be even better,” said Gasseling, who also made some key stops on defense. “We just need to clean up the penalties and do better on our blocking assignments. If we can keep our composure and keep driving, we think we can go far.”
After a three-and-out on East Valley’s first drive, Berg got his team on the board with a 22-yard touchdown strike to junior Banyon Dunn. Selah came right back with a 12-yard TD run by senior Calen Wuitschick near the end of the first quarter, but just two minutes later, Gasseling surged up the middle for an eight-yard scramble to make it 14-6.
The Vikings responded with a sustained drive deep into East Valley territory before Gasseling snuffed out Wuitschick’s rushing attempt on fourth-and-1 with five minutes remaining in the first half.
Key stops like that gave the Red Devils offense the time it needed to find a groove.
“I love this team,” Gasseling said. “Our chemistry is unreal. My teammates make sure I’m up and I make sure they’re up, and we just thrive. I’ve never been part of anything like this before.”
After the teams traded punts, Berg led the Red Devils down the field with two big plays — a 37-yard pass to Braden Albrecht and a 34-yard touchdown pass to Greyson Stevens with 16 seconds left for a 21-6 halftime lead.
Selah couldn’t get anything going on its opening drive of the second half, and just four minutes into the third quarter, Albrecht finished off another impressive Red Devil drive with a one-yard TD run to make it 28-6.
Gasseling tacked on two more rushing touchdowns in the fourth and kicker Angel Lopez finished the night a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points.
Despite a couple minor glitches, the victory was as complete as the Red Devils could have asked for over a stout Selah squad, which finished on a positive note when Wuitschick ran for a 42-yard score to give him 13 TDs on the season.
“We started a little slow today, and we need to improve on that,” said Stevens, who has scored 11 total touchdowns this season, including nine through the air. “But we played a really good team tonight and we just stuck to the things we do well.”
Stevens and his teammates are proud of where they’re at seven games in, but they know there’s a lot left to accomplish.
“We’ve been working so hard since last summer and all we want to do is win,” the Montana State recruit said. “We just need to clean up the little things so we can be clicking on all cylinders for the playoffs.”
The Red Devils insist they aren’t looking past anyone, but with their final two CWAC games against Quincy and Ellensburg — and wins over the three teams closest to them in the standings (Othello, Prosser and Selah) — they are beginning to entertain thoughts about the playoffs.
“We’re definitely excited for the postseason, but we know we need to stay locked in no matter who we play,” Stevens said. “It doesn’t matter if the other team is 0-8 or 8-0; we just need to keep getting better.”
“I think we’re in a pretty good place,” Gasseling added. “We just need to keep going 100% in practice and keep our heads down.”
