MOSES LAKE – Moses Lake quarterback Brady Jay made Senior Night a special one Friday at Lions Field.
The Montana-bound Maverick bounced back from a forgettable week against Eastmont by besting his own school record with nine touchdown passes in the 72-7 victory against West Valley.
Jay tossed eight touchdowns Oct. 3 against Eisenhower. He entered the season already owning the record of seven, and has hit or eclipsed that mark five times this fall.
He has thrown 50 touchdown passes this season.
Six different players caught touchdown passes Friday, with Carter Anderson snatching three, and Grant Smith hauling in a pair. Nolan Decubber, Elijah Burns, Case Anderson and Tyce Miller also had scoring receptions for the seventh-ranked Mavericks.
Jay’s performance was one touchdown short of the state record. Puyallup’s Nathaniel Holcomb (2018) and Kennedy Catholic’s Sam Huard (2018) three 10 scoring passes in a game.
The outburst comes after the Wildcats dropped as many as eight defenders into to pass coverage and held Jay to just 38 yards and picked him off twice. The Mavericks leaned on the ground game and Elijah Burns rushed for 157 yards and two TDs in a 21-0 victory.
Moses Lake improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in conference with the victory, and caps its CBBN schedule Halloween night at Davis. The Mavericks will look to cap their second straight unbeaten run through the conference.
The Mavericks figure to have a high seed in the Week 10 state-qualifiers, and they’ll try to end a CBBN crossover drought that dates back to 2015, when Moses Lake advanced to the state quarterfinals.
