Senior Ariana Lopez scored two second half goals to lead East Valley to a convincing 5-1 victory over Ephrata on Saturday in the first round of the CWAC district tournament.
The top-seeded Red Devils took a 2-0 lead into halftime on goals from Mia Garcia and Allison Fries before Lopez broke the game open in the 61st minute by capitalizing on a defensive mistake and burying the ball in the lower left corner.
Ephrata, the No. 4 seed, stayed within striking distance when Skarlett Sanchez-Medina found the net in the 67th minute. But just six minutes later, East Valley made it 4-1 when Lalliana Valdez sent home a cross from Itzelle Barragan. Lopez put the finishing touches on the win with a penalty kick in the 75th minute — her 36th goal of the season.
Natalie Mendoza and Yube Calderon also contributed assists for East Valley, which advanced to next Saturday’s semifinals. The Red Devils will host the winner of the Prosser vs. Quincy matchup on Tuesday. Ephrata will host a loser-out game Tuesday against fifth-seeded Ellensburg, a 3-1 winner over No. 8 Toppenish.
No. 2 seed Selah also advanced to the semis on Saturday with a 4-0 home win over No. 3 Quincy. Senior striker Elayna Blodgett scored two first-half goals on assists from Maddie Phinney and Reese Robinson. Sophie Blodgett also delivered a goal on a pass from Phinney as the Vikings took a three-goal lead into halftime.
Sophie Blodgett later connected with Robinson in the 63rd minute to help the Vikings avenge a 1-0 road defeat to the Jackrabbits on Oct. 14. The Viks have now won three in a row heading into the Nov. 1 semis, where they will face the winner of Tuesday’s Ellensburg-Ephrata clash.
Also on Saturday, No. 7 Prosser escaped with a 2-1 shootout win over No. 6 Othello after falling to the Huskies 1-0 earlier in the week. Prosser won the shootout 6-5, ending Othello’s season.
