Defining the path to the state playoffs for fall teams

Here's how many state berths are up for grabs, and how teams can nab one

With the CWAC district soccer tournament beginning Saturday and the volleyball tourney to start serving Wednesday, state berths soon will be captured.

With that in mind, here are the paths for football, girls soccer and volleyball teams to get to the state tournament. We start with football, which is an update from an earlier article, and continue with girls soccer and wrap it up with volleyball.

FOOTBALL
CBBN (Class 4A)

2024 qualifiers (prelim seed): Moses Lake (8), Eastmont (20), Sunnyside (30).

2025 Week 10 state-qualifier berths: Four.

In (current RPI): Moses Lake (9), Eastmont (18), Sunnyside (27), Wenatchee (38).

The skinny: Barring upsets and unforeseen tiebreakers, these are the four that will try to break a 10-year drought in the state playoffs. Sunnyside is surging, having won three straight and averaging more than 45 points in those victories.

CWAC (Class 2A)

2024 qualifiers (prelim seed): Othello (10), Prosser (13), East Valley (18), Toppenish (25).

2025 Week 10 state-qualifier berths: Five.

In (current RPI): East Valley (2), Othello (5), Prosser (20), Selah (21), Ephrata (22).

The skinny: The top five can’t be caught, now they’ll wait on the selection committee to place them in the 32-team bracket. How they’re seeded will be interesting. The WIAA formula loves the Red Devils, will the selection committee?

SCAC (Class 1A)

2024 qualifiers (prelim seed): Royal (1), Cashmere (4), Zillah (12), Connell (14).

2025 Week 10 state-qualifier berths: Five, with a sixth playing the Caribou Trail runner-up team for another berth.

In (current RPI): Royal (4), Cashmere (9). Zillah (11). All but in: Connell (20), Naches Valley (21). Could be headed to a tiebreaker: Wapato (34).

The skinny: The big question with the SCAC teams is just how the selection committee seed them. Hard to think five-time defending Royal will be anything but No. 1, and should Cashmere be that far behind, given that they took the Knights to overtime Oct. 3? If the Rangers make it as the fourth or fifth berth, it’s quite a turnaround after a winless 2024.

GIRLS SOCCER
CBBN

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Wenatchee (7), Eisenhower (16).

2025 state berths: Two.

Top contenders (current RPI): Wenatchee (5), Eastmont (19), Eisenhower (21), Moses Lake (24).

The skinny: The Panthers didn’t make it through the league schedule unscathed (lost at West Valley), but figures to be the heavy district favorite. After that, the next three teams are bunched up.

CWAC

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Ellensburg (11).

2025 state berths: Two with a crossover with District 1 (Northwest) for a possible third berth.

Top contenders (current RPI): East Valley (5), Quincy (18). Selah (21), Ellensburg (29).

The skinny: The Red Devils and Vikings got a jump on the state chase Saturday by advancing to the district semifinals. East Valley is 8-0 in October, outscoring opponents 30-5.

SCAC

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Cashmere (4), Naches Valley (10), Kiona-Benton (15), Royal (16).

2025 state berths: Two guaranteed, with two more SCAC teams playing Northeast A teams for berths.

Top contenders (current RPI): Naches Valley (5), Cashmere (6), Royal (11), Wahluke (21).

The skinny: The Rangers are rolling, having won 10 straight, all but one a shutout. Lakeside (Nine Miles Falls) owns the best RPI among the Northeast A teams at 18.

VOLLEYBALL
CBBN

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Wenatchee (2), Davis (9).

2025 state berths: Two.

Top contenders (current RPI): Wenatchee (5), Davis (15), West Valley (26), Moses Lake (28).

The skinny: The Panthers and Pirates are strong contenders to return to the Yakima Valley SunDome. Wenatchee dropped just one set in conference play and that was to Davis, which hasn’t dropped a set in five straight CBBN victories since falling to the Panthers in four sets.

CWAC

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Ellensburg (1),  Toppenish (13).

2025 state berths: Two with a crossover with District 1 (Northwest) for a possible third berth.

Top contenders (current RPI): Ellensburg (2), Selah (10), Prosser (13), East Valley (17).

The skinny: The Bulldogs just won their ninth straight conference championship and hasn’t dropped a CWAC match since 2022. After RPI No. 1 Lynden and No. 9 Sehome the highest ranked team is Burlington-Edison at 22.

SCAC

2024 state qualifiers (seed): Cashmere (5), Zillah (14).

2025 state berths: Two guaranteed, with two more SCAC teams playing Northeast A teams for berths.

Top contenders (current RPI): Cashmere (4), Zillah (12), Connell (19), Wapato (23).

The skinny: Cashmere is on the cusp of finishing unbeaten in the SCAC for the second straight year. Like soccer, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) is the top Northeast A team, ranking 16th in the RPI.
