YAKIMA - East Valley’s fourth-ranked football team took Senior Night quite literally Thursday night.

The Red Devils’ class of 2026 put on a show in their final regular-season game at Earl Barden Sr. Field with a 61-0 handling of Ellensburg to cap an 8-0 romp through the CWAC.

It’s East Valley’s first conference championship since 2004, when the Red Devils won their first 12 games and advanced to the Class 2A state championship game.

At 9-0, it’s now a waiting game for EV. Sunday’s reveal of the 32-team field for the Week 10 state-qualifiers will give the Red Devils their marching orders.

Almost certainly they will be hosting a game next. And almost as assuredly, it will be East Valley’s seniors taking the lead.

“This group has stayed together through and through,” Red Devils quarterback Jaxon Berg said. “Our family and our brotherhood are just incredible. It’s super special that it’s finally come to fruition.”

Berg matched the Yakima Valley record with eight touchdown passes – just two off the state record – with all of the scoring tosses going to fellow seniors. Prosser’s Kellen Moore tossed eight during his senior season in 2006.

Only Moore and fellow Mustangs Jordan Durbin and Tanner Bolt have thrown more career touchdowns than Berg’s 79.

Three of Thursday’s scoring strikes went to Montana State-bound Greyson Stevens – including a 61-yarder on East Valley’s first play from scrimmage, and a 70-yard pitch-and-catch in which the Red Devils’ all-time leading receiver tight-roped his way to open field en route to the end zone.

Cody Gasseling, EV’s versatile wrecking ball, had a pair of TD snags, the latter of which he snapped up just as an Ellensburg defender readied for an interception, and took it 50 yards on a fourth and 18 with seconds left before halftime.

Standout running back Braden Albrecht caught a 4-yard score for his 21st touchdown of the season, and Garen Chapman and Brock Goodell hauled in their first scoring passes of the year.

“We had a couple guys who hadn’t had a touchdown and we made that an emphasis – to get it to them, and that’s probably the best part of the night,” said Berg, who passed for more than 300 yards this season and pushed his touchdown total to 33.

Chapman added a 40-yard pick-6, weaving from one side of the field to the other before scoring.

With the Red Devils ahead 41-0 at the intermission, the game was played with a running clock, giving many of the seniors time to cheer on the younger players.

“It’s amazing, the culture here is a lot different,” said Gasseling, who played his first two seasons at Selah. “I’ve never been around something like this.”

Ellensburg fell to 2-7 for the season, and will play a crossover next week.

East Valley, meanwhile, is peaking as they await the Week 10 matchups from the selection committee.

“It’s out of our control and we’re just going to be patient,” East Valley coach Eric Berg said. “When we figure out who we’re playing, we’ll do our due diligence and get ready for them.”
