TOPPENISH — East Valley earned a hard-fought 2-1 shootout victory over Ellensburg on Tuesday night at Toppenish High School to secure the CWAC district championship.
After both teams converted their first three penalty kicks, East Valley's Yube Calderon missed her attempt wide, setting up senior goalkeeper Kate Ketcham's first save of the shootout. That brought up Itzelle Barragan, who slotted the ball in the lower right corner to give the Red Devils a 4-3 edge. Ellensburg's Brynlee Anderson had a chance to tie, but Ketcham was up to the challenge and secured the ball to put No. 1 seed East Valley over the top.
"I'm really proud of the kids," Red Devils coach Tim Ostrander said. "We have a lot of seniors this year, and I'm so happy that they got to have that moment together."
Fifth-seeded Ellensburg got on the board first when senior Ellie Markus converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute. After trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Red Devils earned a PK in the 55th minute when senior standout Ariana Lopez was taken down in the box. She was injured on the play, but Calderon stepped in to take the kick and evened the score at 1-1.
East Valley put together a number of chances late in the second half and in the two overtime periods, just missing the game-winner on two occasions. But the Red Devils stepped up when it mattered most and took home their second district title in three years.
"I'm proud of how we battled," Ostrander said. "Ellensburg is a much-improved team and they gave us all we could handle. We haven't been tested like that so far this season, and I was proud to see the girls step up in such a big moment."
The Red Devils have now won 10 in a row to improve to 17-1-1 overall. As the No. 6 team in the Class 2A RPI rankings, they will likely host a first-round state game next week. Ellensburg (10-8) is expected to be on the road for its first-round state matchup when the WIAA announces seedings and pairings Sunday afternoon.
SELAH 2, PROSSER 1: At Selah, the No. 2 seed Vikings kept their state tournament hopes alive with a 2-1 victory over No. 7 Prosser in the CWAC district tournament's third-place game Tuesday night.
Senior Sophie Blodgett gave Selah a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute after Maddie Phinney’s shot came off Mustangs keeper Rowyn Flores-Bailey's glove.
Prosser found the equalizer just 90 seconds into the second half when senior Arianna Martin sent home a loose ball from six yards out. Both offenses continued to press, forcing Flores-Bailey and Selah goalie Lacy Patterson to stay on their toes.
The Vikings finally broke through with 14 minutes remaining when sophomore Savannah Close-Schibig pounced on a loose ball following a dangerous corner kick by Braylee Pendleton. Elayna
Blodgett nearly gave the Viks a two-goal advantage in the closing minutes, but Flores-Bailey smothered the attempt to give the Mustangs a chance to equalize.
With the win, Selah (11-6 overall) will host a winner-to-state crossover Saturday against either Bellingham or Lynden from the Northwest Conference. The Mustangs finished the season at 8-10-1.
