Five-time champs, Cashmere among the 1A top contenders

Not only does the SCAC boast a quarter of the 24 berths in the Class 1A state-qualifiers, those teams have quite the diverse playoff history.

On one end there is top-seeded Royal, the five-time defending state champion, and on the other is 22nd-seeded Wapato, playing in its first state play-in game in 25 years in search of the program’s first state berth.

Between the two extremes are second-seeded Cashmere, which pushed the Knights into overtime, No. 14 Zillah, a sophomore-led squad that only lost to No. 1 and 2, and Naches Valley, winless a year ago.

Here’s a breakdown of the four state-qualifiers involving CBBN teams:

No. 24 King’s Way Christian (4-5) vs. No. 1 Royal (9-0)

Time, site: 6 p.m. Friday, Royal High School, Royal City

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class 1A state bracket.

What to know: Royal continues to rule the 1A world, even after graduating a large class from the 2024 squad. Junior left-handed quarterback Grant Wardenaar has stepped in for two-time player of the year Lance Allred quite admirably, and with a bevy of multi-talented weapons, it’s business as usual. KWC is trying to return to state for the first time since 2011.

Who has the edge: The Grant County Knights are the pick in this one. And probably the next couple.

No. 21 Naches Valley (5-4) vs. No. 4 Lynden Christian (8-1)

Time, site: Noon Saturday, Blaine High School in Blaine.

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class 1A state bracket.

What to know: The Rangers rebounded from a winless season by winning five of their first seven games, and nab a play-in berth under coach Matt Keeler. The Lyncs are a one-point loss to Mount Baker from being unbeaten, and won their other games by at least 10 points.

Who has the edge: Naches Valley has had a great season, but Lynden Christian could be too tall of a task for the Rangers.

No. 23 Kalama (4-4) vs. No. 2 Cashmere (8-1)
Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Cashmere High School.

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class 1A state bracket.

What to know: The Bulldogs played Royal closer than anyone has in years, and predictions of an all-SCAC championship game only grew louder. Cashmere has advanced to the quarterfinals or later in three straight playoff appearances. The Chinooks dropped their first two games before winning three straight games to turn the season around.

Who has the edge: Again, Cashmere played Royal as tough as anyone, and the Bulldogs should again make a lengthy playoff run.

No. 18 Connell (5-4) vs. No. 7 Seton Catholic (7-2)

Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver.

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class 1A state bracket.

What to know: The Eagles rebounded from an opening three-game slate that included Zillah, Royal and Othello to earn a play-in berth against last year’s state runner-up. The Cougars are quarterbacked by Trico League MVP Kolten Gesser, the son of former Washington State star Jason Gesser.

Who has the edge: The SCAC prepared the Eagles for the tough opponents, but Seton Catholic has won five straight games and look to make it six.

No. 14 Zillah (7-2) vs. No. 11 Life Christian (5-4)

Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Harry E. Lang Stadium in Lakewood.

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class 1A state bracket.

What to know: Zillah’s impressive sophomore crew – QB Beau Donahoe, RB Maverick Myers, Jace Salme and Brayden Russell – were among the leaders in all of the SCAC offensive categories. Life Christian is led by dyna, mic quarterback Jabez Boyd, who passed for 332 yards and three touchdowns, and rushed for 236 yards and three scores in a 44-38 victory over Cascade Christian for the Nisqually 1A title.

Who has the edge: If the Leopards can contain Boyd – and that’s a big if – they could return to the 16-team bracket.

No. 22 Wapato (4-6) vs. No. 3 Mount Baker (8-1)

Time, site: 4 p.m. Saturday, Blaine High School in Blaine.

What’s at stake: Spot in the Class XA state bracket.

What to know: The Wolves are back in a play-in for the first time since 2000, and they have a tough obstacle in front of them. The Mountaineers only loss was to 3A power Bellevue.

Who has the edge: Wapato will have played Nos. 1, 2 and 3 this season. It would take a Herculean effort to advance past this one, but the Wolves are riding high.
