WENATCHEE - Wenatchee defeated cross-town rival Eastmont 2-0 Thursday night to claim the CBBN district championship for the fourth year in a row.
The top-seeded Panthers ousted No. 2 Eastmont for the second time in the past week and third time this season to improve to 15-1-1 heading into the Class 4A state tournament. They have now won five games in a row after suffering their only defeat of the season Oct. 14 at West Valley.
Wenatchee, which also took down Eastmont 4-1 on Oct. 29, is ranked No. 5 in the latest WIAA RPI rankings and is likely to host a first-round state game Tuesday. Seedings and pairings will be announced Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers are led by juniors Berkeley Boles, Logan Grosdidier and Sophia Garcia, and have just two seniors on the roster in defenders Madison Norton and Zaira Huston.
Eastmont (8-6 overall) will host Moses Lake in a winner-to-state match on Saturday.
MOSES LAKE 1, EISENHOWER 0: At Yakima, the No. 4 seed Mavericks benefited from an own goal in the first 90 seconds and held on to defeat the third-seeded Cadets at Zaepfel Stadium to keep their state tournament hopes alive.
Both teams created numerous scoring chances in the second half, with Ike just missing the equalizer in the 71st minute when freshman Aiyanna Ochoa’s shot from 20 yards struck the crossbar. Ochoa nearly connected on a free kick in the first half, and her breakaway attempt early in the second half was thwarted by Mavericks keeper Emma Thompson.
Cadets senior Laurel Downes also came close to tying the score at the end of the first half when her 35-yard blast sailed just wide of the target. She delivered another powerful strike late in the second half, but Thompson managed to hold on, helping Moses Lake (9-6-1 overall) advance to Saturday’s loser-out game at Eastmont.
Eisenhower was playing without junior team leader Vianey Esquivel, who suffered a concussion in Tuesday’s first-round victory over Sunnyside. The Cadets finished the season at 10-6-2 overall.
