Playoff Primer: Breaking down weekend matchups
A look at football state openers and soccer quarterfinal matchups
STAT HOUND
Nov 14, 2025
Four football teams and two soccer squads will try to advance in the state playoffs beginning tonight when Prosser visits Orting in the Class 2A football first round and continuing Saturday when the other five times take the field.
Here's a look at those matchups:
FOOTBALL
CLASS 4A
No. 10 Bothell (7-2) at No. 7 Moses Lake (10-0)
Time, site: 1 p.m. Saturday, Lions Field in Moses Lake.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 4A quarterfinals.
What to know: Mavericks quarterback Brady Jay is just three TDs shy of the single-season record 67 held by Prosser legend Kellen Moore. Bothell is 3-2 in games decided by a touchdown or less, while Moses Lake’s tightest game was last week’s 14-point victory against Issaquah.
Who has the edge: The Mavericks ended the CBBN’s drought in Week, and now will try for the conference’s first state playoff victory in a decade. If their passing game is clicking, they’re likely to move on.
CLASS 2A
No. 13 Prosser (7-3) vs. No. 4 Orting (10-0)
Time, site: 6 p.m. Friday, Orting Stadium.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 2A quarterfinals.
What to know: The Cardinals rode their Wing-T offense to more than 47 points per game and an SPSP 2A title. The Mustangs have won three straight games, buoyed by the return of sophomore running back Autry Hoefer.
Who has the edge: Orting and its misdirection offense has been held to less than 35 points just once, so Prosser’s sophomore-led crew will have to be at its best.
No. 14 Burlington-Edison (6-4) vs. No. 3 East Valley (10-0)
Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Earl Barden Field in Yakima.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 2A quarterfinals.
What to know: East Valley has three shutouts in a row while scoring at least 56 points in each of those games. The Tigers rebounded from back-to-back losses to Anacortes and Lynden by rolling at North Kitsap 40-0 in a Week 10 play-in round.
Who has the edge: The Red Devils have remained focused all year and it’s hard to think that in front of a home crowd that would change now.
No. 9 Sehome (6-4) vs. No. 8 Othello (9-1)
Time, site: 4 p.m. Saturday, Huskie Stadium in Othello.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 2A quarterfinals.
What to know: This is a rematch of a 2024 first-round game won by Sehome 22-21 at Othello. In terms of common opponents, both teams handled Selah at home. The Mariners only have lost to teams in either the 2A or 1A fields, while Huskies fell to unbeaten East Valley.
Who has the edge: Othello is unbeaten at home this season and the replay of the 2024 round-of-16 game – even down to the seedings – should be a tight one.
SOCCER
CLASS 2A
No. 8 East Valley (17-1-1) vs. No. 1 Columbia River (19-0-1)
Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Columbia River High School in Vancouver.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 2A semifinals.
What to know: The Rapids were the runners-up a year ago and are looking for their fifth state title, all since 2012. Columbia River has given up just four goals this season. The Red Devils are seeking their second semifinal berth in three seasons.
Who has the edge: Hard to beat a team if you can’t score on that team, and Columbia River hasn’t given up a goal in three weeks. Still, with CWAC MVP Ariana Lopez, East Valley has a shot.
CLASS 1A
No. 5 Cashmere (19-2) at No. 4 Montesano (16-2-2)
Time, site: 5 p.m. Saturday, Montesano High School.
What’s at stake: Spot in Class 1A semifinals.
What to know: In a battle of Bulldogs, Cashmere is trying to advance to the state semifinals for the second straight year, while Montesano is aiming at a fourth semi berth in five years after missing out last year. Cashmere is riding a seven-game winning streak after its first SCAC loss in two years in the conference.
Who has the edge: As the seeds would indicate, the teams are evenly matched. Cashmere is averaging more than six goals a game since losing to Naches Valley.
