YAKIMA – The fifth-seeded Cashmere volleyball team wanted another shot at five-time defending Class 1A champs Chelan.
Well, the Bulldogs will get the Goats, but it was all they could handle to get there.
The two-time SCAC champions battled back from a set down to outlast No. 4 Lynden Christian in five sets 25-19, 22-25, 16-25, 25-19, 15-12, and reach the state semifinals for the first time in program history.
Cashmere and Chelan meet in Saturday’s semifinal round at 9 a.m. The Goats won the two matches between the teams this season, although the Bulldogs took the champs to four sets in last week’s district championship.
After Cashmere (21-2) won the opening set against Lynden Christian, the Lyncs – winners of three championships themselves – won the next two sets. The Bulldogs answered, however, winning the fourth set.
With the score knotted 13-13 in set five, two-time SCAC player of the year Macie Smart put away her 29th kill of the match, and Faith Courtney ended it with an ace.
Smart added 12 digs and three blocks against the Lyncs, Courtney totaled 18 kills, six aces, six digs and four blocks, Hazel Scahde had 10 kills and Cali Diaz added 54 assists, 11 digs and three kills.
Cashmere began the day by sweeping former Caribou Trail League-rival Omak 25-10, 25-14, 25-17.
Smart had 12 kills, Taylor Kunz totaled five kills, eight digs and two blocks, Teagan Kerns added five digs and three aces, Courtney chipped in five kills and four digs, and Diaz put up 25 assists, five digs, three kills and three aces.
The Bulldogs, fifth place last year, have guaranteed themselves the best finish in school history.
Chelan (21-0) ran its state winning streak to 25 matches, and haven’t dropped a set since the 2023 final against Freeman.
The Goats are going for a state-record sixth straight state championship. Mead also won five straight titles, winning the 4A crown 2003-07.
The other side of the bracket had a couple five-set upsets, with No. 7 Meridian edging second-seeded Cedar Park Christian and sixth-seeded La Center topping No. 3 Cascade Christian.
