YAKIMA – If it’s mid-November, the Ellensburg volleyball team has a trophy in its sights.
How big that hardware is will be decided Saturday.
The third-seeded Bulldogs (18-2) swept through their first two opponents Friday at the Class 2A
state tournament in the Yakima Valley SunDome, advancing to the semifinals for the third time in the last six years.
Ellensburg has trophied in four of the past six tourneys.
No. 2 Columbia River, the three-time defending champion, awaits for a 10:45 a.m. semifinal in a rematch of last year’s championship match.
The Rapids topped Selah in a four-set quarterfinal for their fifth straight final four.
Ellensburg set the tone for the day in the first set of the opener against 13th-seeded Orting when they gave up just six points in the 25-6, 25-17, 25-19.
The Bulldogs deep lineup was on display with four players recording five or more kills, topped by
Joely Tornow’s 11 and nine from Lydia Simmons. CWAC Defensive MVP Aubree Roseberry delivered a solid all-around game with eight digs, seven assists and seven aces, and Sarah Stueckle dished out 18 assists and added 10 digs.
It was much the same in the quarterfinals against No. 6 Archbishop Murphy. Tornow had 11 kills and four blocks, and Simmons added 12 kills and 21 digs in the 25-19, 25-16, 25-19 victory.
Roseberry totaled 20 digs and nine assists, Hadley Potts delivered 10 kills, Sarah Stueckle had 17 assists and 16 digs, and Ava Stueckle chipped in 10 assists and six digs.
Seventh-seeded Selah opened the day by sweeping No. 10 Pullman 25-14, 25-23, 25-16 before falling to the Columbia River 25-22, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23 in the quarterfinals.
The Vikings meet Archbishop at 12:45 p.m. for a spot in the match for fifth and sixth place.
On the other half of the bracket, top-seeded and unbeaten Lynden swept into the semifinals, giving up 10 or fewer points in three of six sets.
The Lions will meet Northwest Conference rival and fifth-seeded Sehome in the semifinals at 10:45 a.m.
