CLASS 4A
No. 7 Moses Lake (11-0) vs. No. 2 Lake Stevens (11-0)
Time, site: 4 p.m. Saturday, Lake Stevens High School.
Common opponents: None.
What’s at stake: A spot in the Class 4A state semifinals.
What to know: The Vikings are trying to return to the semifinals after falling in the quarterfinals a season ago. Before that, Lake Stevens had advanced to the championship in three straight seasons with titles in 2022 and ’23. The Mavericks ended the Big Nine’s playoff drought, notching the conference’s first playoff since Moses Lake won its 2015 first-round game. Montana-bound quarterback Brady Jay is one touchdown shy of Kellen Moore’s single-season record of 67.
Who has the edge: Moses Lake escaped last week against No. 10 Bothell, 17-14, while Lake Stevens hasn’t had an opponent finish within four touchdowns since a Sept. 19 victory against Bellevue. Vikings playing at home, too.
CLASS 2A
No. 6 Lynden (9-2) vs. No. 3 East Valley (11-0)
Time, site: 3 p.m. Saturday, Clasen Field at West Valley High School.
Common opponents: Burlington-Edison. Lynden defeated Burlington-Edison 21-7 on Oct. 31, East Valley defeated Burlington-Edison 56-22 on Nov. 15.
What’s at stake: A spot in the Class 2A state semifinals.
What to know: The Lions won the 2022 and ’23 championships but haven’t gotten past the semifinals since. The Red Devils are as deep into the playoffs as they’ve been since a 2004 run to the title game. EV star running back Braden Albrecht was sidelined last week, but do-it-all Cody Gasseling ran for 153 yards and a pair of scores.
Who has the edge: The Red Devils haven’t been slowed since a tight Week 3 game against Prosser at home, and are rolling on both sides of the ball. If Albrecht is able to contribute this week, then they’re even more formidable.
CLASS 1A
No. 8 Seton Catholic (9-2) vs. No. 1 Royal (10-0)
Time, site: 1 p.m. Saturday, David Nielsen Memorial Field at Royal High School.
Common opponents: Connell. Royal defeated Connell 54-7 on Sept. 19, Seton Catholic defeated Connell 21-2 on Nov. 8.
What’s at stake: A spot in the Class 1A state semifinals.
What to know: The five-time defending champion Knights have won 45 straight games, almost all in lopsided fashion. They haven’t missed a beat despite only returning a few starters. This is a rematch of last year’s 1A championship game. The Cougars are again quarterbacked by Kolten Gesser, the son of former Washington State quarterback Jason Gesser.
Who has the edge: The Knights are rested after the bye, and seemed poised for their 20th straight playoff victory.
o. 10 Life Christian (7-4) vs. No. 2 Cashmere (9-1)
Time, site: 2 p.m. Saturday, Apple Bowl in Wenatchee.
Common opponents: Zillah. Cashmere defeated Zillah 35-6 on Oct. 17, Life Christian defeated Zillah 28-6 on Nov. 8.
What’s at stake: A spot in the Class 1A state semifinals.
What to know: In the first round, the Eagles avenged a regular-season loss to Nooksack Valley with quarterback Jabez Boyd racked up 504 yards and five touchdowns on 35-of-42 passing. Cashmere had a bye last week, and were going to practice a couple times on the Apple Bowl artificial surface in preparation for Saturday’s matchup.
Who has the edge: Early losses to teams in bigger classification might’ve left the Eagles underseeded. Cashmere’s stout defense will get a test but the Bulldogs seem destined for the semis or beyond.
