Tim Ravet’s time away from the basketball court didn’t last long.
Ravet, who guided his alma mater Kittitas to three straight Class 2B boys championships and
Ellensburg’s girls to the 2023 2A crown and two more title-game appearances, is taking the reins of the Royal boys team.
Greg Jenks resigned in June after leading the Knights to the Class 1A semifinals and a fifth-place finish last winter.
Ravet plans to have a well-known group of assistants that will include former Central Washington coach Greg Sparling and Brock Ravet, the coach’s son and the state’s all-time leading scorer.
Sparling coached the Wildcats to nearly 400 victories in 24 seasons, and more than five seasons at Alaska Fairbanks.
As usual, Royal will get a late start as its football team – which has won the last five state championships – are again in Saturday’s semifinals.
Knights junior Grant Wardenaar, the quarterback for the football team, was an all-SCAC first-team selection averaging nearly 20 points per contest.
Other coaching changes in the three conferences include:
CBBN
RAUL ALVARADO, Davis boys: The longtime assistant takes over after Hall of Fame coach Eli Juarez retired.
BRIAN CLIETT, Eisenhower girls and TAYLOR ELMO, Eisenhower boys: The Cadets promoted from within for their new head coaches. Elmo was a football and basketball standout at Ike, before playing football at Idaho.
KELLEN DRAKE, Wenatchee boys: The Eastmont graduate is part of the Wildcats Athletic Hall of Fame, and coached the past seven seasons at Entiat.
CWAC
AUSTIN SMITH. Ellensburg girls: Smith gets the reins of a Bulldogs program that has played in the state championship game four straight years.
CALEB TOVAR, Othello girls: Tovar, an Othello alum who walked on at Big Bend Community College, has been an assistant for both Huskies programs since 2014.
SCAC
BRANDON EYGABROAD, Cashmere girls: The Bulldogs new coach guided Rainier to six state appearances in seven seasons, compiling a 121-46 record.
DARBI PINK, Connell girls: A multi-sport standout at Chiawana, Pink scored more than 1,000 points at Warner Pacific University.
BRIAN ARROYO, Kiona-Benton boys: Arroyo, who was an assistant at Pasco and Kennewick, takes over for Andrew Raab.
JOEL YELLOW OWL, Zillah girls: The former Zillah returns to his alma mater after coaching at Toppenish, including time as the boys head coach. He’ll have much of the roster that finished fourth at the 1A state tournament under coach Brandi Valadez, who passed away this summer after a long battle with cancer.
