Dec 8, 2025

The CBBN conference schedule begins Friday. Before then, here are predictions for this upcoming season along with a team-by-team breakdown.

PREDICTIONS

STATE QUALIFIERS

BOYS: West Valley, Moses Lake.

The Rams have a roster built for a Tacoma return, while the Mavericks – a game short of the regional round a year ago – have the weapons to advance.

GIRLS: Davis, Eastmont.

The Pirates are eyeing a Class 4A state championship repeat, and the Wildcats will try to join them in Tacoma this March.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

BOYS: Austin Birley, West Valley.

Only a sophomore, Birley has received several college offers, including from Colorado State, where his mother and father played.

GIRLS: Cheyenne Hull, Davis.

The reigning 4A State Player of the Year does it all well, and is primed for a stellar junior season.

BOYS TEAM-BY-TEAM

(2024-25 STANDINGS/2024-25 SCORING LEADERS)

Davis Pirates

Coach: Raul Alvarado.

2024-25 Record: 11-1 CBBN, 21-4 overall.

Postseason: District runner-up, state qualifier.

Top returners: Damien Pimentel, sr., 11.0 ppg; D’Anthony Wiggins, sr., 9.0 ppg; David Vazquez, sr., 5.7 ppg.

Outlook: Alvarado, a longtime assistant for the Pirates, takes over after Hall of Fame coach Eli Juarez retired. The graduation of CBBN Player of the Year Cesar Hernandez leaves a big hole, so returning to the Tacoma Dome for the fourth straight year will be a challenge.

Eastmont Wildcats

Coach: Wayde Knowles.

2024-25 Record: 2-10 CBBN, 5-17 overall.

Postseason: District first round.

Top returners: Tyse Lewallen, sr., 11.2 ppg; Lucas Babst, sr., 9.1 ppg; Jax Kenyon, sr., 6.4 ppg.

Outlook: With five players 6-foot-3 or taller, the Wildcats have decent height. Coupled with a decent group of returning scorers, they’ll be competitive in trying to climb the standings.

Eisenhower Cadets

Coach: Taylor Elmo.

2024-25 Record: 4-8 CBBN, 8-13 overall.

Postseason: District second round.

Top returners: Lucas Stevens, sr., 18.4 ppg; Michael Serra, sr., 10.2 ppg; Jacob Gonzalez, so., 6.5 ppg.

Outlook: Elmo, a former basketball and football star for the Cadets, takes over after being an assistant for Nikhil Lizotte. He’ll have Stevens, one of the league’s top scorers, to lead the charge.

Moses Lake Mavericks

Coach: Craig Groth.

2024-25 Record: 8-4 CBBN, 13-10 overall.

Postseason: District third place.

Top returners: Brady Jay, sr., 17.5 ppg; Grady Walker, sr., 14.6 ppg; Tyce Miller, yr., 10.3 ppg.

Outlook: The Mavs return their top three scorers after falling to Davis in a winner-to-state game. With their experience and scoring punch, Moses Lake could earn its state tournament berth since 1997.

Sunnyside Grizzlies

Coach: Bruce Siebol.

2024-25 Record: 5-7 CBBN, 7-14 overall.

Postseason: District first round.

Top returners: Aiden Sanchez, sr., 26.3 ppg; Julian Villanueva, jr., 6.7 ppg; Robert Ornelas, sr., 5.4 ppg.

Outlook: The undersized Grizzlies – no player taller than 6-foot-1 – will lean on Sanchez and the rest of the shooters if they’re to contend for one of the conference’s two state berths.

Wenatchee Panthers

Coach: Kellen Drake.

2024-25 Record: 1-11 CBBN, 4-17 overall.

Postseason: Did not qualify.

Top returners: Travis Torres, sr., 13.1 ppg; Ryder Wray, sr., 11.0 ppg; Connor Cass, sr., 9.1 ppg.

Outlook: Frake, an Eastmont graduate and member of the school’s athletic Hall of Fame, comes to the Panthers after seven years at Entiat. He’ll have a good chunk of returning scoring to help the team work toward a turnaround.

West Valley Rams

Coach: Tyson Whitfield.

2024-25 Record: 11-1 CBBN, 19-7 overall.

Postseason: District champion, fifth place at state.

Top returners: Parker Mills, sr., 17.1 ppg; Parker Hill, sr., 10.6 ppg; Austin Birley, so., 8.6 ppg.

Outlook: Landen Birley, the program’s all-time leading scorer, graduated, but there’s plenty back to make the Rams the favorite. Austin Birley already has put up a career-high 35 points and freshman Jrayden Whitfield should have an early impact.

GIRLS TEAM-BY-TEAM

(2024-25 STANDINGS/2024-25 SCORING LEADERS)

Davis Pirates

Coach: Akil White.

2024-25 Record: 12-0 CBBN, 24-3 overall.

Postseason: District and state champion.

Top returners: Cheyenne Hull, jr., 21.5 ppg; Isa Garcia, jr., 16.6 ppg; Deets Parrish, sr., 13.3 ppg; Averie Brandt, jr., 10.4.

Outlook: The Pirates are the runaway favorite in the conference race, and with nearly the entire roster back from last year, the top choice in the 4A. Davis will again test itself with a trip to Portland over the holiday break.

Eastmont Wildcats

Coach: Joel Barnes.

2024-25 Record: 8-4 CBBN, 17-8.

Postseason: District runner-up, lost in regional round.

Top returners: Lexi Pilkinton, jr., 13.1 ppg; Noli Johnson, sr., 8.2 ppg; Giselle Hoven, so., 6.0 ppg.

Outlook: The Wildcats fell a game short of a trip to the Tacoma Dome since 2002, and should be near the front of the line of state contenders lining up behind Davis.

Eisenhower Cadets

Coach: Brian Cliett.

2024-25 Record: 7-5 CBBN, 12-9 overall.

Postseason: District third place.

Top returners: Mercedes Garza, jr., 8.7 ppg; Rihanna Espinoza, sr., 5.6 ppg; Nicole Salamanca, so., 4.4 ppg.

Outlook: Cliett, who has been an assistant for the Cadets for three years, takes the reins from Ray Harris. With just three seniors and as many freshmen on the varsity, Ike could be on a youth movement.

Moses Lake Mavericks

Coach: Matt Strophy.

2024-25 Record: 3-9 CBBN, 7-15 overall.

Postseason: District first round.

Top returners: Addyson Burns, sr., 2.9 ppg; Alivia Johnson, sr., 1.4 ppg; Maiya Lam, jr., 1.4 ppg.

Outlook: The Mavs graduated much of their scoring, so returning to the district tournament and advancing past the first round would be a good season.

Sunnyside Grizzlies

Coach: Chris McCallum.

2024-25 Record: 3-9 CBBN, 5-16 overall.

Postseason: District first round.

Top returners: Lili Briones, sr., 16.8 ppg; Aryanna Sotelo, so., 6.7 ppg; Emmelyn Morgan, sr., 3.1 ppg.

Outlook: Briones is the second leading returning scorer in the league, and gives the Grizzlies a shot to advance in the district tournament this winter.

Wenatchee Panthers

Coach: Rachel Lippert.

2024-25 Record: 0-12 CBBN, 0-20 overall.

Postseason: Did not qualify.

Top returners: Karsyn Garcia Miller, sr., 7.3 ppg; Rylee Jones, sr., 6.8 ppg; Danica Cardona, sr., 6.4 ppg.

Outlook: With their top scoring threats back from last season, the Panthers already have broken into the win column, and now will try to do so in conference play.

West Valley Rams

Coach: Lorenzo Juarez.

2024-25 Record: 9-3 CBBN, 14-8 overall.

Postseason: District third place.

Top returners: Sloane Kneisler, so., 10.0 ppg; Peyton Goins, so., 5.2 ppg; Piper Mitchell, so., 2.9 ppg.

Outlook: Without a senior on the roster, the Rams will be led by a strong sophomore class. They’ll again be battling it out for the second spot to the round of 16.
