In the battle for Yakima supremacy, the Davis boys and girls took the first step to proving they run the city.
Using finishing kicks for both games against Eisenhower, the Pirates won the boys game 94-78 after the top-ranked Davis girls pulled away from a pesky Cadets squad for a 71-33 victory Friday night.
The Pirates face the second leg of the Yakima Cup on Saturday when they venture to West Valley.
Davis’ girls improved to 2-0 with their 26thstraight CBBN regular-season victory.
It wasn’t without a good challenge from Ike and first-year coach Brian Cliett. The Cadets weren’t afraid to mix it up with the defending Class 4A champs and trailed by just five –26-21 – at the intermission.
“We adjusted to the physicality and said, ‘OK, we can be just as physical as you are,’” Pirates coach Akil White said.
Davis also started to shoot well, in particular Isa Garcia and Averie Brandt.
After a solid 11 points in the first half, Garcia torched the nets for 19 points after the break.
And Brandt, scoreless before the intermission, had 15 after the break and reacted to her first made 3-pointer as if to say ‘finally.’
“I think she’s the best shooter in the state,” White said of Garcia.
Reigning 4A player of the year Cheyenne Hull finished with 22 points for the Pirates, who outscored
Ike 26-5 in the fourth to make the final score appear more of a runaway.
Mercedez Garza had 22 points for the Cadets (1-3).
In the boys game, Raul Alvarado notched his first victory of his career. After an 0-4 start to the season it welcomed, even more so coming against Ike.
“It feels really, really good, it really does,” he said after the Pirates beat the Cadets, themselves guided by a first-year coach in Taylor Elmo. “And for these guys to feel that taste of what we’re trying to implement.”
Like the girls, this one was very much in doubt heading into the second half.
Ike was able to stay within reach of Davis behind the post play of Jacob Gonzalez, who scored 17 of his team-high 29 points in the first half to keep the Cadets (1-3) within four – 45-41 – at the break.
The Pirates were able to get some distance in the third quarter, and Ike took a big blow when top scorer Lucas Stevens went down with what appeared to be an injury to his left ankle.
David Vasquez and Marcus Smith each sank a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth to put the game out of reach.
Davis knocked down 13 3s for the game, with Damien Pimentel canning six of them en route to a career-high 34 points. D’Anthony Wiggins finished with 22 points (15 in the first half), David Vazquez had 16 and Marcus Smith chipped in 15.
“I knew this team had the ability (to shoot well), and it was the ball movement and we’ve yet to do that,” Alvarado said. “It was a good display and hopefully it can be there in the next game because we’ll definitely need it.”
That next game is against league favorite and reigning district champion West Valley.
The Rams improved to 4-0 on Friday by beating Eastmont, and have yet to score fewer than 85 points this season
