West Valley boys boast a glut of weapons
Rams rolling on offense, likewise Davis girls have a stacked lineup

After Friday night’s victory against Eisenhower in which Cadets’ post Jacob Gonzalez had a 29-point outing, first-year Davis coach Raul Alvarado saif he had a plan for Saturday’s matchup with fourth-ranked West Valley and longtime frontcourt fixture Parker Mills.
Indeed, the Pirates slapped on a zone and held the 6-foot-6 senior to two points in the first half, and nine for the game, more than 10 points less than the per-game average he brought into the contest.
The problem is, stopping the Rams potent offense is much more than limiting one player. Like a leaky bucket, stop one spout and another starts flowing.
West Valley defeated Davis 83-68, erasing an 11-point deficit in the first quarter.
The Rams are on such a roll that Saturday actually was its lowest output of the season.
Sophomore Austin Birley had made a great leap from a year ago, nearly tripling his season average to 25.3 points a contest, and had a career-high 35 last weekend at Mead.
Fellow 10th-grader Jett Bremerman is up to 16 per game, almost 10 more than a year ago when Landen Birley – the school’s leading scorer – led the West Valley to a fifth-place finish at the Class 4A state tournament.
Add in freshman Jrayden Whitfield, the son of Rams coach Tyson Whitfield, and steady senior guard Parker Hill, who found his range Saturday for a season-high 18, and it’s a lineup that will cause nightmares.
Weapons galore, too
Similar to the West Valley boys, the top-ranked and defending 4A state champion Davis girls team also has an embarrassment of riches.
Reigning 4A Player of the Year and state tourney MVP Cheyenne Hull and fellow junior and first-team all-leaguer Isa Garcia are each averaging 20 points per game after beating Eisenhower on Friday and West Valley on Saturday.
Rounding out the top of the junior class, Averie Brandt and Kobe Johnson are averaging 9.7 and 8.3 points per game, respectively.
Oh, and first-team all-CBBN senior Deets Parrish, who this fall signed to play at Eastern Washington, should return to the lineup during the holiday break, if not sooner.
Milestone x 2
It was a special night Saturday for the Prosser girls basketball team against Ephrata.
Senior Deidra Phillips and junior Herbie Wright both reached the 1,000-point march in the 95-31 victory over the Tigers to give the Mustangs a 2-0 start in the CWAC.
The duo became the 12th and 13th members of the club for Prosser.
Mustangs assistant Tamara Jones is the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,930 points.
20/30 for the Grizzlies
Sunnyside swept its conference-opening trip to Wenatchee behind big games from junior Aiden Sanchez and senior Lili Briones.
Briones scored a season-high 30 points as the Grizzlies beat the Panthers 55-44 for their first win of the season.
Sanchez scored 20, with none more important than the final two – a layup at the buzzer to give Sunnyside the victory and a third victory in a row.
The all-conference first-teamer of a year ago is averaging 29.3 points per contest this season, and eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career in the second game of the season.
Sanchez is one of several players – including Davis’ Damien Pimentel, Moses Lake’s Brady Jay and Eisenhower’s Lucas Stevens – whose hot shooting could help lead a team to a state berth alongside powerful West Valley, the heavy favorite in the leagues.
A Royal return
Eight days after quarterbacking the Royal football team to its sixth straight Class 1A state championship, Knights junior Grant Wardenaar returned to the basketball court by scoring 42 points in a 72-56 victory against Connell.
Wardenaar, a first-team all-SCAC selection a year ago, led the Knights to the district championship last winter and a fifth-place finish at state.
