SUNNYSIDE -- Sunnyside junior Aiden Sanchez poured in 49 points to set the school’s single-game scoring record in a 75-55 nonleague victory Tuesday night.
Sanchez, who surpassed the 1,000-point mark earlier this season, topped the record of 42 points set by three players, including his older brother, Trey Sanchez.
Larry Den Boer – the father of future all-time state leading scorer Lance Den Boer – first hit mark against Toppenish in the 1974-75 season. Trey Sanchez (2016-17) and Ethan Copeland (2019-20) then matched the record.
Trey Sanchez, seven 3-pointers, and Copeland, 12 treys, make the most of their long-distance shooting to set the record, while Aiden Sanchez hit just two shots from beyond the arc.
Aiden Sanchez made 13 of 16 free throws, and scored 16 points in the third quarter, 13 in the second, 11 in the first and nine in the final period.
Trey Sanchez hit 42 in Bruce Seibol’s first season coaching Sunnyside. The Grizzles advance to the Class 4A state tournament.
Sunnyside improved to 4-1 for the season, and returns to play Friday when they host East Valley in another nonleaguer.
The Grizzlies return to conference play Jan. 9 when they visit fourth-ranked West Valley.
