Toppenish wrestling takes down Othello

Wildcats boys and girls assert CWAC dominance by beating Huskies

TOPPENISH – Toppenish’s boys and girls wrestling teams put its CWAC dual dominance on display Wednesday night.


The Wildcats’ defending state champion girls squad defeated Othello, the state runner-up, 41-30, while the 2025 state runner-up Toppenish boys handled the Huskies, third at Mat Classic XXXVI last winter, 55-12.


Top-Hi was second behind Orting at last year's state tourney, while Othello was third.


For the Wildcat girls, defending 105-pound champ Sophia Torrez won by pin, as did Adalyne Montiel, the champion at 110 last year who is wrestling at 115.


Othello freshman Addie Russell announced her presence, defeating 135-pound defending champion Sara Ortega 7-3.


On the boys side, Toppenish’s Isaiah Rios, last year’s champion at 126, pinned Mason Russell, third at 132, in the 144-pound match.


Toppenish’s Steven Romero, the state champ at 113 in February, won by pinfall at 126 on Wednesday night.


The dual season will continue through Feb. 5 with the district tournament set for Feb. 13-14 and Mat Classic XXXVII is Feb. 20-21.
