ELLENSBURG – Two streaks of series dominance came to an end Friday night in Ellensburg.
Prosser’s girls, who have four straight top-five state trophies but haven’t been able to take down the powerful Bulldogs since the 2021 spring pandemic season, finally broke through.
And Ellensburg’s boys ended a lengthy losing streak to the Mustangs, but needed a little extra time to do so.
On the girls side, third-ranked Prosser jumped on No. 5 Ellensburg then held off the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter for a 60-54 victory.
Mustangs junior Herbie Wrights scored 26 points and Prosser built a 16-point lead going into the fourth before the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to as few as three, keyed by Bella Standish who finished with 22 points.
Ellensburg had won 48 straight in its home gym.
Prosser (4-0 CWAC, 5-1 overall) hosts East Valley on Saturday, while Ellensburg (2-2, 4-2), which saw its 82-game regular-season winning streak ended by Grandview on Thursday, is off until next week’s AVISTA Holiday Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.
Ellensburg’s boys ended an 18-game losing streak to the Mustangs 71-70 in overtime.
A balanced scoring attack led by Easton Armstrong’s 19 points, Will Bennett’s 18 and Hudson Murphy’s 17 keyed the victory for the Bulldogs (2-2, 2-4).
Daniel Diaz had 25 points for the Mustangs (3-1, 3-3).
