BELLEVUE – Davis girls basketball coach Akil White proclaimed that championship pedigree travels.
“We want the big games,” White said.
And none were bigger so far in 2025-26 than the one Monday night when the defending Class 4A champion Pirates traveled across the mountains to face a young and hungry Bellevue squad, which is No. 1 in 3A.
Reigning state player of the year Cheyenne Hull had 31 points and 16 rebounds, and Isa Garcia added 26 points as Davis pulled away from the Wolverines for an impressive 79-68 victory in front of a packed gymnasium.
A 14-2 Pirates’ scoring run over a 3 1/2-minute span in the second quarter turned a seesaw game into a big Davis lead (37-22).
“We were definitely looking forward to this game,” Hull said. “We’ve been waiting ever since the beginning of the season when we heard we were playing them.”
Ninth-grader Iyla Jones led Bellevue with 19 points.
Here are three takeaways from the game:
Davis duo unstoppable
If this sounds like a broken record … well, it is:
Hull, a junior, cannot be stopped.
Garcia, a junior, sinks big shots.
That is how it played out Monday. Hull was a constant-motion force on both ends, especially around the basket. And after Garcia was twirling her way into the lane for tough buckets in the first half, she swished three 3-pointers in the third quarter.
“Cheyenne can get a little bit heated up (in temperament), but Isa is as cool as the other side of the pillow,” White said. “I think she is the most underrated kid in this state.”
Chippy nonleague rivals?
Even though Monday is the game that counts in the WIAA win column, these two programs played in championship tournaments twice past summer, both won by the Pirates.
Needless to say, things got a bit chippy in this showdown.
Even between the coaches in the third quarter.
After Hull’s bucket gave Davis a 52-34 lead at the 5:20 mark, the Wolverines scored the next 11 points, capped by Lucia Mayorquin’s corner 3-pointer.
In a timeout, White told his players, “If that is all they got, we are good!”
Bellevue girls coach Romell Witherspoon must have overheard White, because he responded with OK-it-is-on chatter.
Davis closed the quarter on a 14-5 run, sparked by a pair of Garcia 3-pointers on the same spot on the floor.
“I wanted us to stay confident and do what we do,” White said. “My girls have to believe in me.”
STAT HOUND NOTES
Davis now heads to Portland for the POA Holiday Classic, where they’ll be in the Platinum Division of the 64-team event.
The Pirates will open against Mission Hills, Calif., on Saturday, and continue Classic play Dec. 29 and 30.
On Sunday, Davis will meet defending Oregon 6A champion Tualatin.
In boys action, the Wolverines defeated Davis 75-61.
Jackson Skaggs scored 25 points for Bellevue, and Damien Pimentel led the Pirates (1-6) with 21.
