The top-ranked Davis girls basketball team is ready to take its unbeaten record to Portland this weekend.
The defending Class 4A state champions will again be part of the 64-team POA Holiday Classic at various locations around the Rose City.
Mission Hills of San Marcos, Calif., is first up for the Pirates at noon Saturday. Win or lose, action will continue Monday and Tuesday.
Davis heads south after defeating Bellevue on Monday in a matchup of the No. 1 teams in 4A and 3A in a packed gym that included former NBA star Nate Robinson, who was a demonstrative spectator.
“It was really fun for the kids,” Pirates coach Akil White said. “Sometimes at state games (in the Tacoma Dome), you don’t really feel the crowd. The girls felt it and played at a really high level.”
Davis held off the Wolverines 79-68 with junior stars Cheyenne Hull and Isa Garcia combining for 57 points.
That followed what White said was the most complete game the Pirates have played this year, an 84-45 dismantling of Greater St. Helens League hopeful Camas.
“We just played out of our minds,” White said of the victory over the Papermakers. “People think we played really well Monday, but I thought our best game was against Camas.”
Davis is one of 12 Washington teams, including 4A runner-up and second-ranked Sumner (the only in-state team to beat the Pirates last season), 4A No. 3 Lake Washington and Bellevue.
California powerhouse Mater Dei, ranked sixth in the MaxPreps national top 25, is the top of the seven from the state.
Oregon boasts 43 teams, with five of the schools hosting games.
The 64 teams are split into eight groups – Davis is part of the Platinum Division – so possible opponents are limited.
Faith Family could be awaiting in Tuesday’s Platinum final. The Dallas team is one of the state’s top teams, and plays more of a national schedule against other private schools and academies.
Sandwiched between tournament play for the Pirates is a Sunday matchup with defending Oregon 6A champion Tualatin.
Davis went 1-2 at last year’s Holiday Classic, defeating West Linn on the first day, before falling to Clackamas and Willamette the final two days.
“We want the opportunity to play these teams, and we ask the kids, ‘what’s the worst thing can happen?’” White said. “The experience is the thing.”
White said he’s still trying to add another nonleague matchup for this season.
Eastern Washington signed Deets Parrish should rejoin the Pirates lineup early in January, when the Pirates return to conference play.
Other teams headed out of state for holiday tournaments:
Ellensburg boys and girls: Avista Holiday Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho.
Prosser boys and girls: KSA Holiday Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.
Royal boys and girls: Cactus Jam in Scottsdale, Ariz.
