PORTLAND – The perfect season for the top-ranked Davis girls basketball team is no more – but its demise wasn’t without a fight.

Battling through foul trouble, Washington's defending 4A champion Pirates took Oregon’s reigning 6A champion Tualatin to the wire Sunday evening before a nearly half-court buzzer-beater lifted the Timberwolves to a 74-71 victory in a special attraction outside of the POA Holiday Classic.

Last year's state Player of the Year Cheyenne Hull played less than 16 minutes, saddled with foul trouble much of the contest before fouling out.

Paige Gasseling also fouled out, while fellow starters Averie Brandt and Isa Garcia were whistled for four fouls apiece.

Still, despite being called for 24 fouls compared to Tualatin’s 16, the Pirates led by as much as 13 points in the first half and were up 71-68 in the final minute of the game.

However, Maaya Lucas sank one of her three 3-pointers to knot the score.

Davis turned it over on the ensuing possession, and Love Lei Best got a running start and sank a shot just across half court to give the Timberwolves (6-0) the victory.

Garcia canned 4 of 7 3s and topped the Pirates (6-1) with 22 points. Brandt and Hull each had 16 points, with the latter adding a team-best seven rebounds.

Davis returns to action in the Holiday Classic at noon Monday when they meet South Medford in the semifinals of the Platinum Division.

Kendall Dawkins led the Timberwolves with 28 points on 12-for-18 shooting and nine rebounds.
