The Royal and Zillah basketball teams began the new year with a key doubleheader at Zillah Alumni Gymnasium.
The second-ranked Leopards girls topped Royal, which came into the game No. 9 in the 1A poll, 55-39.
In a matchup of unbeatens, No. 1 Zillah handled third-ranked Royal, 80-60.
The teams will meet again when the Leopards head north Jan. 16.
