Davis coach Akil Smith said he wanted to add one more game to the Pirates’ nonleague schedule, mentioning a couple of west side schools as possible opponents.
Turns out, there was a pretty good opponent not too far away.
Zillah, which ascended to the top spot in the Class 1A poll this week, will visit Davis on Wednesday, Jan. 21 for a nonleague contest against the top-ranked and defending 4A champions.
The Leopards (9-1) have won nine straight games since a season-opening loss at CWAC favorite Prosser.
At the SunDome Shootout, Zillah rolled past West Valley and ended a 68-game regular-season winning streak for 2A contender Deer Park in overtime.
Already with all-SCAC players Makenna Klitzke, Bella Valadez and Angelina Buck, the Leopards beefed up their lineup with Kennewick transfer June Fiander, who was a second-team all-Mid-Columbia Conference selection a year ago.
Zillah returns to conference play Tuesday with a trip to College Place.
Davis is 7-2 after splitting four games in Portland just before the new year.
The Pirates went 2-1 at the POA Holiday classic to finish third in the Platinum Division of the 64-team event.
They also lost on a buzzer beater to defending Oregon 6A champion Tualatin in a game outside of the POA brackets.
The junior-led squad resumes CBBN play Saturday with a trip to Eastmont.
