The battles for the top spot in the CWAC girls standings have shown that the conference has a top half ready to fight for the conference’s two state-tournament berths.

And the rest of the state is taking notice.

Four teams from the CWAC – Prosser (No. 3), Selah (No. 6), Ellensburg (No. 8) and Grandview (No. 9) – made VaristyWA’s weekly top 10 released Monday morning.

The Greyhounds earned their first spot in the rankings after Saturday’s 70-48 victory at Selah, a night after being humbled on the Mustangs’ home court.

The Vikings handed Prosser its first conference loss, scoring the final 11 points of the game.

And Ellensburg, which some might have thought was relinquishing its grip on the conference, proved its still very capable, dousing Selah’s excitement after the victory against the Mustangs.

Round 2 for many of the matchups is coming as the conference has started the back half of its schedule.

February should be particularly intense – the four teams are battling for two state berths, with one team meeting a Northwest Conference opponent in a state play-in game.

Elsewhere in the rankings, Davis returned to CBBN play with a dominating performance against Eastmont, and remains No. 1 in 4A.

Zillah’s boys remained unbeaten while the Leopards girls ran their winning streak to 11 games, and both squads again hold down the top spot.

Wapato girls (No. 5) and Royal’s boys (No. 4) and girls (No. 8) also are in the top 10s.

West Valley’s boys are seventh in 4A, and Selah is No. 3 in 2A after its one-point victory against Grandview (No. 10) on Saturday.
