Lance McGee, the former Davis standout who transferred to Sumner and led the Spartans to a repeat of their Class 4A state football championship with a record-setting season, flipped his commitment Sunday from Oregon State to Washington State.
The move was announced on Instagram by Warren Barreiro, McGee’s agent.
McGee reopened his recruitment when Trent Bray was fired as head coach in October, before recommitting after the hiring of JaMarcus Sheppard, only to decommit again last week.
He reportedly didn’t sign a National Letter of Intent with Oregon State, but a non-binding financial aid agreement.
Bray, a Pullman native, has since been hired by new Cougars coach and Prosser native Kirby Moore, himself hired Dec. 12.
McGee was named the WSFCA 4A State Player of the Year and VarsityWA’s All-Classifications Player of the Year.
The CBBN Defensive Player of the Year as a junior, McGee transferred to play for defending 4A champion Sumner.
The Spartans got on a roll after a 2-3 start, winning nine straight and repeating as state champion with McGee leading the way.
After rushing for 313 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-35 semifinal victory against top-seeded Puyallup, McGee ran for 368 yards and six TDs in the championship game against Lake Stevens.
McGee finished the season with 2,466 yards and 42 touchdowns on 251 carries.
He was at the Eisenhower-Davis basketball doubleheader last month, joking with Pirates football coach Jay Dumas – a former standout receiver and punt returner at WSU – about winning a championship.
Dumas quickly reminded McGee that he won two while playing at Tacoma’s Curtis High School.
