With the state tournaments less than seven weeks away and the nonleague schedules all but wrapped up, Stat Hound decided to throw all classifications together and deliver a top 10 for the teams from the CBBN, CWAC and SCAC.
Intended to recognize the accomplishments of the teams while stirring a little debate, here is what the inaugural rankings look like.
Have your own take on an all-classes top 10? Feel free to send your rankings to scores@stathoundmedia.com.
1. West Valley: With defense being the focus since back-to-back losses at the end of last month, the high-powered Rams are living up to the expectations with which they entered the season.
2. Zillah: If two-time SCAC MVP Dekker Van De Graaf isn’t 100%, he can’t be too far off for the last undefeated team in the Stat Hound footprint. A victorious trip to Royal on Friday could give the Leopards an insurmountable lead in the SCAC.
3. Selah: The Vikings are currently trying to beat the flu bug that center Finnegan Tait and CWAC MVP contender Oliver Pepper in the last week. Selah has a two-game pad atop the CWAC, and should lock down a top seed to the state tournament.
4. Grandview: The Greyhounds were a point away from a road victory at Selah. With standout senior point guard Frankie Medina back after an injury, Grandview looks poised to snag one of the CWAC’s two state berths.
5. Moses Lake: The Mavericks battled Davis for the conference’s second berth to state a year ago, and figure to be in the mix again, again with all-state quarterback Brady Kay also shining on the basketball court.
6. Royal: Junior lefty Grant Wardenaar has four games with 40 or more points, and will face his biggest challenge Friday when top-ranked Zillah comes to town. The Leopards made it a priority to stop the star quarterback and he finished with a season-low 16 points, all of them in the second half.
7. Sunnyside: With high-scoring junior Aiden Sanchez and Julian Villanueva as a solid sidekick, the Grizzlies look to get a grip on the No. 3 spot in the CBBN with Thursday’s trip to Davis.
8. Connell: The Eagles took a big step toward the third seed in the District 5 tournament with a victory against Wapato for their seventh straight victory.
9. Wapato: Like Connell, with Zillah and Royal holding down the top two spots in the SCAC and Chelan ranked fifth, the Wolves could find themselves in quite a battle for the district’s fourth state berth.
10. Ellensburg: The Bulldogs avenged an earlier loss to Toppenish to grab the last spot in the rankings. Either of the two teams could be the CWAC’s No. 3 out of district to face a Northwest Conference team for a state bid.
