Beyond the doomination of the first-place teams in the CBBN, CWAC and SCAC – a collective 6-0 on Saturday – things tightened up a bit this weekend.
In the CBBN, Eastmont's girls upended second-place West Valley, 60-58, shrinking the Rams' edge over Sunnyside to just half a game. Giselle Hoven had 22 points for the Wildcats.
The Grizzlies boys broke a second-place tie with Moses Lake on Friday. Aiden Sanchez scored 36 points and Julian Villanueva added 17, while leading the effort to keep high-scoring Mavericks senior Brady Jay to 16.
Ellensburg's girls, coming off a 74-47 loss to third-ranked Prosser, again proved it's not going away. The seventh-ranked Bulldogs beat No. 9 Grandview to pull within half a game of the Greyhounds.
On the boys side, the Bulldogs upset Grandview, also ranked ninth, allowing Prosser – which defeated Ellensburg on Friday and East Valley on Saturday – to move within a game of the Greyhounds.
Grandview was without second-leading scorer Braden Santos.
Royal's girls team – looking for its first state berth since 2001 – beat Connell 78-63 on Friday with Brianna Cedillo sinking seven 3-pointers. Graycie Kast's 21 points helped the seventh-ranked Knights beat No. 5 Wapato 51-43, and are now just one behind the Wolves in the lost column.
Atop the CBBN, top-ranked Davis rolled past Wenatchee and completed a season sweep of Eisenhower, while West Valley, No. 7 in the VarsityWA poll, defeated Eastmont in its lone game of the weekend.
In the second matchup of one of the Stat Hound area's most intense rivalries, Davis rallied from six points down going into the fourth quarter to force overtime where the Pirates defeated Eisenhower 93-80.
D'Anthony Wiggins' 19 points led five Davis players in double figures. Marcus Smith had 18 points, David Vasquez and Damien Pimentel each had five points in the extra sessionm and finished with 16 and 14 points, respectively, and Tyce Hayden sank 5 of 6 free throws in OT and finished with a dozen points.
Jacob Gonzales scored a game-high 22 points for Ike, which also got 19 from Charlie Davis and 18 from Lucas Stevens.
Selah's third-ranked boys beat Toppenish and Ephrata by 29 points each and improved to 13-0 in CWAC play, ensuring the Vikings no worse than a share of the conference championship.
BOYS STANDINGS/GIRLS STANDINGS
No. 3 Prosser cruised past Ellensburg and East Valley, with star junior Herbie Wright scoring 33 points in each game. Wright climbed to fourth on the program's all-time scoring list behind Kelly Blair, Jordan Brown and Tamara Jones.
Zillah's boys and girls, both unbeaten in conference play and No. 1, swept Wahluke and Connell to remain in control in the SCAC.
