With just two more weeks with full slates of conference play before the postseason gets rolling, several players are stepping up to help their teams earn – or maintain – a top seed into district play.
Here are eight performances from this weekend that could prove crucial as the regular season winds down.
BOYS
PLAYERS
AIDEN SANCHEZ, Sunnyside: Already having broken the school’s single-game scoring record his older brother Trey was a coholder of, the junior scored a game-high 36 as the Grizzlies topped Moses Lake 73-68 on Friday to take sole possession of second place in the CBBN. Also of note, fellow 11th-grader Julian Villanueva added 17 points and helped limit Mavericks’ high-scoring senior Brady Jay to 16.
COLTON STENDERA, Cashmere: The 5-foot-10 junior score team-highs of 13 and 21 points – the latter nearly doubling his season average – in victories against College Place and Kiona-Benton. The Bulldogs have won three straight conference games and five overall as they inch back into the SCAC race in search of their second straight state berth.
DEKKER VAN DE GRAAF, Zillah: The two-time SCAC MVP seems to be back to his full self after being sidelined with an ankle injury. After scoring 18 points in three quarters of Friday’s victory against Wahluke, the senior took over Saturday’s win at Connell. With the Leopards up six going into the fourth, Van De Graaf netted 12 of his game-high 28 points as Zillah scored 30 points in the quarter and Zillah pulled away for an 83-65 victory.
TEAM
DAVIS: With their 15-year winning streak against the Cadets in jeopardy, it became a team effort to avoid the end of the 34-game streak. With five players in double figures, Davis overcame a six-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter to force overtime, where they pulled away for a 93-80 victory. D’Anthony Wiggins finished with 19 points, Marcus Smith 18, David Vazquez 16, Damien Pimentel 14 and Tyde Hayden 12. Wiggins, Vazquez and Pimentel each had five points in the extra session.

INDIVIDUAL
KOBE JOHNSON, Davis: A year removed from season-ending knee surgery, the Pirates junior found her range this weekend. After knocking down three 3-pointers and scoring 19 points in a victory at Wenatchee, she drilled seven treys and had 27 as top-ranked Davis beat rival Eisenhower, 83-42.
BELLA STANDISH, Ellensburg: A day after foul trouble slowed her in a loss at Prosser, the junior bounced back with 27 points to lead the seventh-ranked Bulldogs to a 62-41 victory against No. 9 Grandview. The victory avenges an earlier loss to the Greyhounds, who ended Ellensburg’s 82-game regular season winning streak, and keeps the Bulldogs in the thick of a tight race for the CWAC’s two state berths.
HERBIE WRIGHT, Posser: Since its lone conference loss of the season Jan. 6 to Selah, the Mustangs have been on a tear, winning seven straight blowouts. Wright, who is closing in on a second straight CWAC scoring title, had back-to-back games of 33 points in victories against Ellensburg and East Valley. She has 1,403 career points, with only Mustang greats Kelly Blair, Jordan Brown and Tamara Jones ahead of her on the school’s all-time scoring list.
TEAM
ROYAL: In search of their first state berth in a quarter of a century, the Knights notched a pair of victories with different players leading the way. While freshman Lauren Wardenaar has topped Royal in many games, Brianna Cedillo knocked down seven 3-pointers and had 26 points in a victory at Connell. A day later, Graycie Kast followed with 21 points and the Knights upended Wapato.
