East Valley football coach Eric Berg collected another honor Saturday.

Berg, who guided the Red Devils to their first CWAC championship and Class 2A state semifinal berth since 2004, was named the District 5 Coach of the Year by the Washington State Football Coaches Association.

District 5 covers includes the CBBN, CWAC, SCAC, Caribou Trail League (1A), Central Washington B (2B/1B) and Eastern Washington Athletic Conference (2B).

East Valley defensive coordinator Kenneth Hails was named the District 5 Assistant Coach of the Year. The Red Devils defense posted three shutouts and held seven opponents to seven points or less this season.

Earlier this week, Berg was announced as the East coach for the Earl Barden 2A/1A/B All-Star Classic which will be played Saturday, June 20 on East Valley’s home field.

Red Devil quarterback and the coach’s son Jaxon Berg, running back Braden Albrecht and defensive back Jayden Buckalew will play on the East squad.

Coach Berg was named the CWAC Coach of the Year, and his son won the Offensive Player of the Year and Portland State-bound lineman Zeliah Wade was named the Defensive Player of the Year.

In 10 seasons at East Valley, Berg is 52-46.
