Eisenhower continued its late-season push under first-year coach Brian Cliett, beating West Valley, 61-57, for the second seed in the CBBN girls district tournament.
The tournament’s format makes the difference between the No. 2 and 3 seeds massive.
Although the Cadets will face top-ranked and defending Class 4A state champion Davis in the district final, their path to the state tournament is dramatically easier. Should they fall to the Pirates, they’d still have to win just one game to earn the school’s first state tournament berth since a fourth-place finish in 2006.
The Rams would have to win two games to get to the winner-to-state round.
Eisenhower has won six straight games, including two against West Valley, after starting conference play 3-4.
Mercedez Garza topped the Cadets with 19 points, and Rihanna Espinoza and Ruby O'Connor each had 11.
The Cadets’ victory also avoids any conflicts for the district championship schedule.
Davis (19-2) will host the Cadets (13-8) at 6 p.m. Thursday. The Pirates have won the conference and district championship four straight seasons.
A few miles to the west, sixth-ranked West Valley, which capped an unbeaten run through the conference Tuesday, will host Moses Lake in the boys district final at the same time.
Last season, the Pirates and Rams met in both district championships, resulting in the girls game being moved to Wednesday.
In another tiebreaker Saturday, Wenatchee's girls kept their season going by edging Moses Lake 37-34 for the sixth and final spot in the district bracket.
