Zillah handles Cashmere, rolls into district final

No. 1 Leopards to meet Royal, which is state-bound for first time in 25 years

Zillah’s top-ranked girls basketball team is headed back to the state tournament.


The Leopards, the defending district champion and seeded No. 1, rolled past fourth-seeded Cashmere 74-29 for their eighth straight win a spot in Friday’s District 5 championship.


Zillah (21-2) will host No. 2 seed Royal, which beat third-seeded Wapato, 48-31.


Angelina Buck led four Leopards in double figures with 15 points, Makenna Klitzke and Bella Valadez had 14 and June Fiander chipped in a dozen.


Zillah held Cashmere to single digits in each quarter. Addie Talley led the Bulldogs (13-9) with 10 points.


The sixth-ranked Knights (20-3) will be making their first state appearance in 25 years.


Royal junior Graycie Kast, who matched the school’s single-game scoring record with 39 points in 

Thursday’s victory against Omak, tallied 21 points against the Wolves, and Lauren Wardenaar added 12 points.


Faith Kenoras had eight points for Wapato, which was limited to 17 points after the first quarter.


The Wolves (17-5) on Tuesday will meet fifth-seeded Cascade, a 72-62 winner against No. 6-seed 

Kiona-Benton in a loser-out contest. Wapato would advance to winner-to-state crossover with a Northeast 1A team by beating the Kodiaks.


Naches Valley (12-10) stayed alive Saturday by edging Omak 36-34. The Rangers will visit Cashmere on Tuesday in a winner-to-crossover/loser-out contest.

Prosser, Ellensburg advance

Third-seeded Prosser rolled past Othello 91-65 in a loser-out contest Saturday. The Mustangs (11-12), who were the state runners-up a yea ago, will visit top-seeded Selah on Tuesday at 6 p.m.


In another elimination game, fourth-seeded Ellensburg (11-13) topped No. 8 seed Quincy 62-53, and will head to Grandview.


Tuesday’s winners earn a spot in the district final and a state tournament berth.
