Davis was doomed.
The Pirates couldn't even get through the pregame layup line
unscathed with Davis guard Damian Pimentel rolling an ankle.
The Pirates' 35-game winning streak against rival Eisenhower that dates back well more than a decade? Gone for sure.
There was no way the Davis could keep its season going, down 26 to a Cadets squad that seemed bent on ending the slump against their crosstown rivals.
"I was thinking, 'is this going to be one of those nights?'" first-year Davis coach Raul Alvarado said.
Nobody, however, told Pirates seniors Pimentel, Davis Vazquez and D'Anthony Wiggins.
The trio, held quiet in a first half in which Ike standout Lucas Stevens alone outscored the Pirates, came alive in the second half to recessitate Davis' hopes of a fifth straight trip to the Tacoma Dome for the Class 4A state tournament.
A 3-pointer in the final seconds by sophomore Marcus Smith capped the improbable, lifting the Pirates to a 67-64 victory and another game.
"It was really crucial these guys come together as one," Alvarado said. "That was the true testament,"
The Pirates went into halftime down 36-18, with Stevens having scored 20 points. And it got worse with the Cadets' lead ballooning to 26 points, and was at 21 going into the fourth.
Little by little, they rode their press and chipped away, and were down six in the final minute.
Vazquez started the final kick with a 3-pointer, during which Pimentel was fouled. He made the first of the free throws, but missed the second.
Wiggins, though, was there for the rebound, and layin to knot the score 64-64.
The Cadets were unable to score, and Davis took over, with Smith's trey sending the Pirate Ship into a frenzy,
Wiggins finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds, Vazquez had 18 points and Pimentel 12.
Stevens led Ike with 21 points, Jacob Gonzalez had 11 and Charlie Davis 10. The Cadets finished the season 5-16.
Next up for the Pirates (8-13) is fourth-seeded Sunnyside, which ousted No. 6 Wenatchee, 61-45.
Grizzlies junior Aiden Sancez, the CBBN's scoring champion scored a game-high 24 points, Julian Villanueva and Ike Weets each had 13 and DiLucas Salinas chipped in 11.
Sunnyside (13-8) built a 12-point halftime and extended that edge to 16 going into the fourth.
The Grizzlies and Pirates will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday.
On the girls side, West Valley (11-10) and Eastmont (9-11) advanced.
Rams sophomore Myah Bartel scored a game-high 23 points, and Sloane Kneisler added 14.
West Valley will host Eastmont at 5 p.m. Thursday, ahead of the boys district championship between the Rams and Moses Lake at 7.
