From the opening tip of Thursday’s CBBN district championship game, Davis left no doubt about its intentions for the rest of the postseason.
The defending Class 4A state champion Pirates plan to suffocate the opposition — even beat them into submission — as evidenced by their convincing 79-33 win over cross-town rival Eisenhower.
Led by the 21 points from senior Deets Parrish and 17 from junior Isa Garcia, Davis overwhelmed the upstart Cadets out of the gate and never let up, winning their 14th straight game and fourth consecutive district title.
“Ike is one of our biggest rivals, and we wanted to come out aggressive and play our game,” Garcia said. “Our goal was to come out with a big bang, and we definitely did that.”
Reigning state Player of the Year Cheyenne Hull contributed 14 points and seven rebounds and junior Kobe Johnson scored 12 as the Pirates sprinted to a 26-4 lead after one quarter and a 46-14 halftime advantage.
The Pirates (20-2 overall) stormed the Cadets at both ends of the floor, blocking shots, forcing turnovers and winning loose balls until they invoked the running clock with 5:20 left in the third quarter.
“Going for the district title made us want to beat them even more than we did during the regular season,” Johnson said. “We just wanted to kick their butts and get them outta here.”
Johnson, Garcia and Parrish knocked down shots from inside and out, and the Pirates were equally efficient at the free throw line, giving head coach Akil White his 100th victory for the black and orange.
“We’ve had a winning culture since the first day I got here,” said White, who has coached many of his players since they were in elementary school. “We wanted to come out hungry tonight, and I feel like we are primed and ready for the next round.”
White tipped his cap to Eisenhower (13-9 overall), which won six in a row to reach the district title game. The Cadets will host Eastmont on Saturday in a loser-out contest after the Wildcats defeated West Valley on Thursday night.
“I’m glad we got to play Ike because of their physical style,” the coach said. “They are rugged like some of the teams from the west side that we’re going to face at state.”
Despite being No. 5 in the WIAA’s latest RPI rankings, the Pirates hope to begin 4A state tournament play on their home court again next weekend with a top seed.
Only this time, they won’t be offering any concessions to their opponent. Davis surrendered a fourth-quarter lead against Sumner in last year’s regional round, falling 67-62 before taking down the Spartans 61-45 in the state title game one week later.
“I think we underestimated Sumner last year and we let ourselves down,” Garcia said. “But we’re not going to let that happen again. We’ve definitely learned from our past mistakes.”
Garcia believes the Pirates are laser-focused this year, and they expect to be there in the end at the Tacoma Dome.
“We’re ready to make another run,” she said. “We’re practicing really hard and preparing ourselves to repeat. No letdowns from here on out.”
Johnson is looking forward to contributing to a possible championship redux this year after missing last year’s playoff run due to an ACL injury. She enjoyed cheering on her teammates from the bench, but this time is different.
“It feels amazing to be back out there,” Johnson said. “I have put in a lot of work to get back, and it feels so good now that I’m able to help us win."
Eastmont stays alive
Fourth-seeded Eastmont beat No. 3 West Valley 64-58 on Thursday night to advance to a loser-out contest Saturday.
Sophomore Giselle Hoven scored 21 points to lead the Wildcats (10-11) .
Sloane Kneisler scored 14 points and Myah Bartel had 13 for the Rams, who finished the season 11-11.
