SELAH – A year after district disappointment, Grandview’s boys are riding high.
Pulling away in the fourth quarter, the second-seeded Greyhounds handed top Selah its first loss this season to a CWAC opponent, 71-60, on Thursday night at Carl Kellman Gym.
Grandview earns the conference’s top berth to the Class 2A state tournament, after losing in a winner-to-state-loser-heads-home crossover a year ago after running through the CWAC undefeated and being ranked near the top of the 2A poll all season.
“It feels really good, I’m super happy for them,” Greyhounds coach Frankie Medina said. “Good teams have to play through things. They stuck together and it paid off.”
Braden Santos scored a game-high 25 points, Frankie Medina had 18 and Darius Montelongo 14 for Grandview (18-6).
Medina, who eclipsed the 1,000-point mark on Tuesday, has battled multiple ankle injuries this season.
“It was frustrating for him, but he showed leadership when he was out,” the elder Medina said.
Grandview nearly won at Selah early last month, falling 68-67,
“Being on the road as good as they are, and being able to pull away and make stops,” he said.
Oliver Pepper led the Vikings with 24 points.
The Greyhounds (18-6) and Selah (21-3) will find out Sunday where they’ll be for round-of-16 games.
Prosser moves on to crossover
Adrian Rivera scored 15 points, Branden Clarke had 14 and Dallas Cortes 12, and Prosser beat Ellensburg on Thursday night to advance to a winner-to-state contest Saturday.
The Mustangs (12-13) will host Lakewood (16-7).
Ryder Smith scored 18 points and Will Bennett had 14 for the Bulldogs, who finished the season 10-15.

The third-seeded Wapato girls topped Naches Valley, 68-46, on Thursday to earn third place in the district and will host a crossover Saturday against the Northeast 1A runner-up Saturday.
Jordyn Bobb scored 15 points, and Brook Alvarado added 14 for the Wolves (19-5).
Mia Staggs scored 15 points for the Rangers (13-11), who visit Lakeside on Saturday for a state berth.
On the boys side, Wapato (14-11) lost at Chelan, 76-67, and heads to Medical Lake on Saturday for a winner-to-state crossover.
