TACOMA – Sunnyside’s girls were strong again on prep wrestling’s biggest stage.
The Grizzlies finished tied for fifth in the Class 4A team standings and had an individual champion at Mat Classic XXXVII – although it might not have been who many expected to be atop the podium.
Junior Alyssa Graciano won the championship at 125 pounds, defeating Kamiakin’s Daneill Tristan 3-0 in the final.
Graciano scored a takedown, then wouldn’t let Tristan turn her for two periods and captured the title. The district runner-up finished the season 32-11.
Sunnyside senior Danica Torres, the champion at 105 pounds a year ago, advanced to the championship round again, this time at 110 pounds. Unfortunately for Torres, she met Mead’s Briella Portrey in the title bout.
The top-seeded Portrey capped a 40-1 freshman season, pinning Torres early in the third period.
Torres finished the season 37-6.
Moses Lake’s Eli Anderson finished second at 215, dropping a 4-2 decision to Mead’s Logan Ullah in the championship bout.
The Mavericks finished sixth as a team with six medalists.
Eisenhower’s Jarek Dobbie finished second at 132 pounds. Like Torres, Dobbie ran into a buzzsaw in the title match.
Tahoma junior Owen Marshall, the champion at 126 in 2025, pinned the Cadets sophomore late in the first period. Marshall has eight pins and two technical falls in the last two tournaments for the three-time defending champions.
Dobbie finished his season 39-5 and qualified for his first Mat Classic for the conference and district champions. Three Cadets earned medals.
