Eisenhower girls returning to state tourney

Sunnyside boys, and Selah, Wapato girls also advance to round of 16

Eisenhower’s late-season push is sending the Cadets girls basketball team to the Class 4A state tournament.


Mercedes Garza scored a game-high 13 points, Ruby O’Connor added 11 and Ike defeated Eastmont, 59-52, to earn its first state berth since a fourth-place finish in 2006.


The Cadets (13-9) have won seven of their past eight games, with the only loss to top-ranked Davis in Thursday’s CBBN district championship game.


Ike, and every other team that earned a state berth, will learn their round-of-16 opponent when the state brackets are revealed Sunday.


On the boys side, Sunnyside posted a commanding victory at Moses Lake to nab the CBBN’s second berth to state.


Conference scoring champion Aiden Sanchez led three Grizzlies in double figures with 24 points. Julian Villanueva chipped in 16, and DiLucas Salinas added 14 for Sunnyside (15-8), which advanced to the regionals for the first time in six years.


Brady Jay, the record-setting quarterback who is headed to Montana, scored a game-high 26 for the Mavericks (14-8).

Selah ends state drought

Elyse Kingston and Makenna Pepper each scored 17 points to lead eighth-ranked Selah past Squalicum, 61-39, in a District 5/1 crossover for its first berth in the state tournament since 1981.


The Vikings (19-7) have won three of four heading into the round of 16.


On the boys side, Prosser (12-14) saw its season come to an end with a 57-47 loss to Lakewood in a District 5/1 crossover.


Branden Clarke topped the Mustangs with 14 points, and Daniel Diaz Garcia added 12.

Wapato girls advance

Eighth-ranked Wapato is returning to the Class 1A state tournament for the fifth straight year with a 54-40 victory against Colville.


Brook Alvarado scored 20 points and Jocelynn Bibles had 10 for the Wolves (20-5).


Wapato’s boys (15-11) saw their season end with a 75-62 loss at Medical Lake.


Naches Valley’s girls (13-12) also were stopped shot of a return trip to the state tournament in a 63-32 loss at Lakeside of Nine Mile Falls.
